>wenzi = mosquito.
If I can get the tones right - one little slip and I'll be saying the word for writing or text (or so my handy Berlitz pocket dictionary tells me).
I've GOTTA find someone here who speaks Mandarin to work on tones with. It seems I keep running into Cantonese speakers.
> Let this be your first Australian-speak lesson: mosquito = mozzie. (We have a lot of Aussies here, so it helps to know a little of their language in order to communicate well.)
At least Austrailian is a lot easier to comprehend than Scottish. I sat there with a dumbfounded look on my face more than once in Edinburgh (and I'm about 1/2 Scottish).

No worries about that one. they are both wen2 but the one for text is at the end of a word like yingwen - English writing. People will understand context. If you say 'wenzi yao de wode pigu' No one will think it was writing that bit you on the ass. But watch your vowels because if it sounds like 'woza yao de wode pigu'...........

Con what a brilliant idea. My son's Chinese is fantastic but he hates sports. He could earn a lot of money as a translator, he likes money. m

... This place isn't for everybody... I ditto that laoban. I should have moved on soon after 6 month in GZ. The Center of the World or Birth of Humanity is vast as one can imagined, and where you would see a Lotus or a Bentley parked next to a man which yearly salary is about US. $600. Laowai we are, laowai we will remain and forever; enduring prorated prices, poor consideration and all kinds of stereotypes from our hosts, I had never sought Chinese people to be so hermetical.

Landed at 4:00pm, I am now in Beijing , where SO FAR waitresses do not pour your beer, where a bowl of rice is actually a bowl, where it doesn¡¯t stink, where folks speak actually Chinese, but it has been 5 hours only and comparing to two years in Guangzhou

And now, an important news announcement (and another reason why I love sunny Florida):
Jumping sturgeon knocks man unconscious
Tue Aug 8, 6:59 PM ET
WILDWOOD, Fla. - A man riding a personal watercraft on the Suwannee River was injured after a 4-foot-long sturgeon jumped out of the water and hit him, wildlife officials said.
Blake Nicholas Fessenden, 23, was heading north on the Suwannee River Sunday just north of the Hart Springs Sand Bar when he was hit and fell off the craft, according to a statement from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Fessenden was knocked unconscious.
His girlfriend was riding another watercraft behind him and was able to get to Fessenden and hold his head above water before passengers on another vessel arrived to pull him from the water, officials said.
He was airlifted to Shands Hospital in Gainesville with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.
A 31-year-old woman was hospitalized in April after a 3-foot-long sturgeon jumped into a boat being driven by the woman's fiance. The pair was also on the Suwannee River.
Officials at the time said similar accidents occur once or twice a year on the river and that the fish can jump as high as 8 feet in the air and can weigh up to 200 pounds.

If 'personal watercraft' are those revolting machines like water-based motorbikes - my response is "Fish rule!" Way too noisy and irritating when you are planning a calm day at the beach or out fishing, diving, swimming peacefully. And often the people who use them have no idea of water safety - I don't think you need a license to drive them unlike other boats or land based similar vehicles.

It's my understanding that before you can operate these devices in Florida, you must first pass a rigorous series of tests to prove:
1. Complete knowledge of how to violate all water safety regulations. 2. Proper psychological mindset for total disregard of all humans and wildlife in the vicinity.
Those failing these tests are restricted to normal powerboating until they can develop the requisite skills.

And yet ANOTHER reason to live here in the Sunshine State, or perhaps another symptom of spending too long in the sun.
Bat, trimmer, hammer used in lawn brawl
Thu Aug 24, 6:08 PM ET
FRUIT COVE, Fla. - The supervisor went for a bat. The employee whipped out a weed trimmer. Another worker used a hammer to break up the fight.
That's the scene St. Johns County authorities described Tuesday after a lawn service supervisor criticized one of his worker's grass-cutting skills, The Florida Times-Union reported.
Lance Tywan Wamley, 26, of Hollywood, Fla., is charged with threatening several men with a 34-inch baseball bat and then hitting one man in the chest. The worker, Eric J. Torres, 23, defended himself with a weed trimmer, authorities said.
Another worker, armed with a hammer, broke up the scuffle, authorities said.
Torres was treated at a hospital. Wamley was charged with felony assault and battery. Information on his legal representation was not available Thursday.

Damned. Must I always pull and reinstall my video card at every startup to be able to use these icons!!!! You will all appreciate that North Carolina, my little state in eastern U.S. has at least required that all Jet skis operators be 16 or older or a parent must be onboard. . Too many deaths/injuries.

... This place isn't for everybody... I had never sought Chinese people to be so hermetical. they can be ziploc baggies from time to time, but they do warm up if you smoke local cigarettes, have a cell phone that's cheaper than theirs, ride a bike, and smile when the whisper "laowai".

No worries, Barbie, good to hear from you again. By the way, there's a cricket thread somewhere in the saloon if you're interested in having a look.
