Millana, I pulled my laptop out of my backpack so they could hand it around the bloodhound machine thingy; they thanked me and ran it through. Guess you technically could smuggle something in it... Needless to say, I pooped my pants, but it's none the worse for wear.
And this was the Van airport. Imagine the scandal if they fried laptops?

Oh, yeah, Hamish's tired and confused advice works. Until you hire a cab.

It was a shuffle game that I played.. first I carefuly weighed all of my luggage before I left for the Toronto airport. It weighed in at 115 lbs. so I knew it was within the weight restriction. My carry-on was aybe 2 kilos over weight. The guy at the airport made me take everything out of the bag. When he told me it was within the restrictions Iknew he had to be wrong because I weighed it at home. I left the books on the counter and walked away. A few minutes later Ireturned and said I was going to put them in the garbage, and apologized for leaving them on the counter. I walked around the corner out of sight and put them back into my carry-on. My logic was that the bag only weighed a few kilos over, and hell I had lost 30 kilos of personal weight so what could it hurt.
I didn't get medical insurance.. although I went to see my doctor about immunizations before I left.. he advised me not to drink the water. I didn't get any immunizations.. Iguess I was living dangerously.
When I came to Beijing I had a vistor visa 'L' type. At that time you could upgrade to a business visa 'F' type without leaving China. I quickly upgraded to the 'F' visa. You cannot do this anymore. I would advise to get the 'Z' visa before you leave Canada, you probably won't be able to get a visa upgrade without leaving the great PRC.
Worry not. Your laptop is safe.. as I said before my laptop made it.

I’m debating on whether to purchase a decent laptop (with a few bells ‘n whistles in tow – software in English) before I come over or when I get there – any bids on what damage the dent will cause to my wallet if I do my bargaining in China?

Relatively decent laptops seem available here at somewhat cheaper prices that in Oz, but that was just a day of looking around. Maybe others have more info.
English software is easily available in HK and surrounds, but harder elsewhere. bring the software, or buy in in HK.
I would say, buy the laptop here once you know you have the cash spare. But, I am happy using desktops. Maybe others will say other things.

If you are interested in purchasing a computer while in China, don't forget to talk to your school. Many schools can get good discounts on them because of guanxi or just buying in bulk.

If you want IBM then it is easy to buy from DELL China online. They have an english website and there are deals every month. You can get the bank to wire the cash and they deliver to your door. I had mine delivered to the school and it took about 5 days. You get your very own Engrish speaking salesperson and can e-mail each ither back and forth. He will supply routing number for their bank, etc..

Would the Dell be less expensive in China or the same price as in North America??? If it is the same company would the price not be the same with the same deals? ? My son builds computers for a living at a computer store, and I can get one at employee discount. ;D Haven't asked him to price one yet. Maybe I should.

If he can get the parts at dealers prices, and build it for you at home, then it will be even less. This is what I do the the Land of Oz. One of my students there has a dealers licence, made for cheepnis.
