I betcha a million bux that if this country would have an abundant weed supply and/or a weed culture people would not be as retarded as they are...
I know one thing for sure, if I could have smoked a coupla fatties during all of this I wouldn't have been so frustrated and despondent...

Naturally. THC is one of the great anti-stress drugs, working directly on the part of the brain producing those types of chemicals.
This is also why ex-potheads or those going cold turkey can't deal with stress very well until their biochemistry normalizes. Takes a while.

I was speaking generally, not specifically, loops. I am sure you are dealing with it. Frustration is a terrible part of life here. Pot would probably help, but I don't smoke it. Besides, I don't like the idea of getting shot for pot.

Yeah, pretty much, but recently (last ten years) pot was shown to work directly on the centres of the brain involved with stress. As such, it technically and potentially a very dangerous drug, not pretty much harmless as previously thought.
The same chemicals are released in meditation, yeah, AJ. Meditation is therefore a dangerous drug, I guess.

Has anyone here done the visa run to HK? I'm here on a tourist visa right now, and am pretty sure I'm going to need to run to HK to get a work visa sorted out. If anyone here has gone, do they have any tips, such as good places to stay and things I should be prepared for, etc?

Have never been to Honkers, Nate, but twice have had an "L" visa changed back to "Z" with residency in Jinan.

Sure thing. Been to HK a few times on a visa run, and I opted for the 'same day service' just to save money. Costs a bit more money then, but you won't have to spend it on hotels and food. Plenty of places to get the visas btw, but I just went to the CITS at Central.
You can find okay rooms on Paterson rd btw. There's a couple of hostels there that have rooms for 180-250. Bit nicer than Chungking or Mirador.
Btw, I think you can just convert your current visa to Z where you are now. After one year in China they can't extend the visa any longer, and then you'll have to leave the country once. So then the HK trip is necessary. But if you've not been there for that long yet, you can just get a new visa at your local PSB hang-out.
HK is great though. Just take swimming gear and head out to Lamma or Cheung Chau for a day.

I think Tianjin, (where I'm at right now), is a little more strict in that regard, in part because they are actually able to grant tourist visas upon arrival, (I think I read that somewhere). Thus, it can be kind of a pain to switch to a Z. At least one school said they weren't able to convert it, but I'll try around and see if I can find one with a bit more guanxi.

Hmmm, I've just had a complication in the Z visa application process. I got a call from my new FAO today and he said that in order to get the invitation letter from the Tianjin government that I needed the health exam completed. Previously, that was taken care of upon arrival in China, (actually, I did it in America but then they made me do it again because American hospitals don't have a big red stamp to put on their documents). The school seems paranoid about having me do the exam in China, as they don't seem to want them to know I'm already in the country. Any clues on what to do here? Is this just a misunderstanding or are they trying to make coming here to work as much of a pain in the ass as it can possibly be.

Kinda smells of the latter. Tell them you will take the exam there in TJ, take it or leave it. What, you're going to go back to the States to take an exam that a) you've already taken and b) they won't accept results from anyway?

It is probably some fool with a hair up his ass - still attached to his head. Do you have a copy of your old one - either the test, the certificate for preference, or the old US one? Tell them you are already in the country, (again) and show that to them. See if that does the job.

It's all cleared up, and it was the fault of my FAO. He's never recruited someone who came over on a tourist visa before, and he was weary of revealing that I was over there on a tourist visa to the Tianjin Government. All is well, and I will be taking the exam in Tianjin at a special clinic that deals in that sort of thing. Thanks anyway.

it was the fault of my FAO Nate, I find that hard to believe. All the best with the exam mate, hope they use a nice clean glove, and that it's not too cold.

I have been here more than 18 months now and had my Z visa/residents permit extended for that time. I don't plan on leaving the country for at least another year, and the FAO has only said to bring my visa in for extention sometime or another before January when it will expire. They don't seem to think I need to leave the country.
