I have uploaded half of my holiday snaps - the other 2 discs are still in a box somewhere in the China POst system, coming from Xining. So here are some of the ones I liked most from the adventure. No particular order. Work Place Health adn Safety? Yeah right - always wanted to be a construction worker in China. Reflections of a monk - Upper Wutou Monastery Tongren Headdresses of Tibetan women during Bun Festival - Tongren Shaman and company, Bun Festival Tongren "I don't like getting my feet wet either" - Hua Hu, scenic route from Langmusi to Songpan via Tang Ke. Prayerflags and mountains, Mountain pass, scenic route Langmusi to SOngpan. One of the reasons I love Langmusi - mountains at edge of town. Another reason I love this area - horses, wildflowers. Yours truly on her trusty steed. Mineral water spring - mountains around Langmusi. Great tasting water. Sunset outside Tibetan village - Gansu Mountain marshlands - outside Langmusi. Want to come climbing with me? 4800 metres - great climb, great views. At the top, tossing wind horses to the gods. Our luncheon restaurant - home was also like this - minus the electricity lines in background. Tsampa box - I really wanted one, but too ahrd to carry, and the yak butter, even if washed out would still have retained that distinctive odour - especially in Xi'an's summer! But tsampa could be worse to live on! "You move, we haul" International Yak Removalists. Just like nainai and yeye, little one at a temple in Chengdu. Temple rooflines, Chengdu Multi-coloured calcification at Huanglong.

Wasn't Tibet as on the map - just historically. Gansu and Sichuan. Qinghai photos - again with Tibetan atmosphere - will be uploaded when and if they arrive.

Very nice, actually. Maybe the rest will make me want to go too. I always wanted to get high.

now that i'm here, even more to look forward to...great pics, LE...can't wait to see the others...and I hope one day to have some of my own... not sure which part of the construction worker pic is funnier: him mooning you or the fact that he's going to fall soon.

Lotus, you know what I think of your photography skills. You've maintained the standard damn well improved upon it. Well done, again.

Yes, these are indeed glorious photos, Lotus. It was an honor simply to resize them all to fit the browser window for you. (But seriously...really amazing pics...) What is a Bun Festival? Hair buns, barbecue pork buns, or some kind of mountain grabass party?

I'm sorry Raoul - I thought I had resized them - 640x480?? I'll go smaller next time.
Bun is the Tibetan religion pre-dating Buddhism there. So the festival has Shamans, dancing, sacrifices - not virgins guys!! Just baijiu, food, kadahs etc.
Some of the guys we met there invited us to eat with them - which for that day made the 3rd dry bread and tea meal!! The previous 2 - breakfast and lunch - were with a monk at his place in a monastary outside Tongren. But they were kind and fun and we had a great time.

No worries, babe...these pics are worth it. For most browsers 600 seems to be the maximum width....600x450 seems to work well for most horizontal photos.
No grabass. Quelle dommage...

I'm so jealous, I would love to do a trip like that before I leave here, I would love to go to Tibet, but have to admit, I'm a bit nervous about doing such a big journey by my lonesome. You take some great photos

I only put in the photos I like. You don't see the hundreds that are fuzzy, wrong light etc etc.

Some of us here, Sallie, me, the Dean of Admin, are driving from Baoding to Lhasa and back (about a 40 day trip) starting about 20 July.
We will take so long because we are going to launch off highway to see some of the remote stuff. There will be a caravan of vehicles including some four wheel drive gizmos. We are trying to launch a touring company that can employ some of our students later.
Interested?

Wow, Hamish that sounds fantastic. Certainly a triop of a lifetime. Is it a tour group looking for paying customers or a group of people who have decided to do the trip independently?
Guys I am still thinking about what to do on the summer holidays. I think I want to travel in China with some foreigners. Gretch, Big George anyone who is up to travel plans.

It is expensive,
USAnians are going to cough up US $4,500 or so, plus hotels and meals.

Ouch! That is expensive. The train will be loads cheaper. (And for bootcamp people will provide you with days of opportunities to practice your Chinese!)
Does that include the permits to enter? And where are you going - Qomolongma National park also requires entry fees of x per person and x per vehicle. What about the 'guide' you are supposed to have in Lhasa and the 'compulsory' stay there for 3 days?

Ruth/ Woza Yes, I'd be interested in trying to set something up!!! Maybe we could get enough of us rounded up...should we start a thread? Summer holiday plans? I'm pretty open to anywhere, I have just always desired to go to Tibet, but I'd also like to see Guilin...most of you've prob already been there though, I would guess? Only places I've been to in China are Beijing, Louyang (sp?)=Longman Grottos, etc., and went to see Shaolin Temple, not sure of the city it's in. The only thing is that I don't plan to stay in China for much long after the semester. Was looking to go back to the states around end of July/ Early Aug. Hamish, That sounds perfect...except the expense and length, but wow!!! But for that type of trip I guess that price would be expected?...what an experience of a lifetime.... Let me know!!!
