Here are some amazing pandas I saw at a place I'll fill in when I am really Mich again and not Raoul... Biggest thankyou Raoul for doing that for me...I really should have been born a blonde, but I guess God though that would be an insult to them... Yes, these are the pandas at Chengdu. Like I have said before, I am not much of an animal person. But these little guys won my heart. The keeper was trying to get the 6 month old panda into the pool. But I guess like all kiddies, human or otherwise, no one likes bathtime. You can get a picture taken with this little guy as well as another one...all for the mere cost of 1200 yuan..yes, I almost fell on my @rse also. If you ever go near Chengdu, seriously take the time out to go see these little fellas. It's about a 40 minute drive from Chengdu. We couldn't find a cabbie to take us. We ended up going to another hotel and went on one of their day tours... entrance is 30 yuan, it cost us 80 each with a driver who took us there and back. Which considering where it was, isn't really too bad. hope you enjoy the pics...'Love me, don't bother me' - I have adopted that little motto cheers This is kind of a 'what the hell are you looking at?' this little guy was the cool as...personalitly plus Sign at the panda compound. Raoul says he wants a tattoo with this phrase.

My favourite are the red pandas. Did you see them when you were at Chengdu? That's where I saw them first.

Pandas have eaten people. They sometimes go carnivorous. Have been known to go down the mountains into villages for lunch.
They might think they are a cow, but they have a lot of bear still in there. They can't even digest bamboo, and if I recall correctly, they need to eat some meat or get malnutrition. But then, without snails, sheep get deficiencies too.
Carnivorous sheep, yet. (They eat them with the grass, not go looking for them. I understand that with pandas, it is mostly the same, but sometimes they hunt lizards etc. But, if it isn't just a myth, sometimes go "bear".)
I love animals too, not the least of which being on my plate (not endangered species, though. A pity, since they are likely the tastiest.)

Red pandas are fairly common, well at least they're not endangered, and the most they have in common with the other panda is the name panda. Only a very distant relative.

red pandas? I never heard of them or saw them before reading this post. darn.... did any of you guys know these suckers existed? Yes. I live with a guy who used to run a zoo and raised a kid who was nuts about animals. Nolefan, go to the zoo in Beijing. The red panda exhibit is close to the panda exhibit. To me, they look more like racoons than pandas. Since we're sharing - this guy put on quite a show for us at the Beijing zoo last year. He got up and walked all around the enclosure... ...then sat back down in the 'classic' panda pose and continued to eat his breakfast.

The red pandas are on the endangered list. There are 6-7000 in China, 5-600 in India and only a few hundred in Nepal. Their closest relatives are the giant panda. In the wild they live about 17 years, in captivity less than 10 years.
Red pandas were discovered before the giant panda, and the local name - poonya - was Anglicised to panda.
They are cute.

They're also known commonly as Lesser Pandas...the namesake for a ridiculously expensive brand of cigarette. They helped establish that all pandas are much more closely related to raccoons than they are to bears or cats.

Hey Mich, Showin' off ya panda snaps again ay? Glad to see you made it to the saloon! Knew you'd fit in with this crazy crowd! ;D I'm really jealous of all of you that have seen pandas! They are contenders for the cutest animal in the world title. If I ever go hiking in the mountains I'm gonna catch me a red 'un and train him to climb up and wrap himself around my head Davie Crocket style....

There was a TV comedy show, british, with a running series of sketches of pandas in a zoo. Two guys making fun of the tourists etc. Very funny. Oh, yeah, I think one had been identified as the wrong sex or something, so they were supposed to mate, too.

>They helped establish that all pandas are much more closely related to raccoons than they are to bears or cats. I think red pandas are not too distant from racoons, but read somewhere recently that the latest examination of giant panda DNA puts the big ones back in the bear category. And now that today's science trivia lesson is over, please allow me to lose my composure momentarily and react to the photos. THOSE ARE S OOOO CUTE!!!!!!!!!!! I WANT ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They have both red and giant pandas at the Wuxi zoo. Saw them on saturday. The giant panda was inside in air conditioned comfort we could see him through a window. The red ones were also inside but one came out for a couple of minutes and then went back inside. It was too hot outside for them.
