Con, that is EXCELLENT advice. I have one thing to add that is more important for females than males, but applies to males on some occasions - always carry tissue. It is NOT provided when and where one needs it. Nate - welcome to this side of the world. Glad you made it safely, and wow, internet access so quickly. Were you at a bar, in your own flat, at the school?

I will second Ruth's rule and add - Never leave home without your tissues and camera.
No. 2 rule here - enjoy yourself! This is a great place - I have met so many fantastic people - Chinese and foreigners - smile and talk to everyone!!!
No. 3 rule - plan on everything taking longer - even a 'duck into the shop' takes twice/thrice as long as you expect. a) because of No. 2 and b) because this is China!!no

I thought I had the sweetest deal in China, but I believe you've just topped it. Congrats!

I've got a computer with broadband here in my apartment. Pretty sweet, huh? Just when I was beginning to like you. I share this one with 10 other people.

Just to stop you feeling too smug Nate....I've got a broadband connection computer in my apartment too Welcome to China. I think Con has given you all the advice you need. Oh yeah one more - Don't be afraid to perv at (I mean check-out) the cute young things too much. They're gonna be doing the same to you so it's allowed

I thought everyone got internet unless you free-lance. But we had a thread on this and some people don't. Now I pay for water---6Y for 18 litres but it was free before. And I pay utils which I did not do before. A lot of perks though. New TV with ear-splitting sound and cable. Can't think of much else...

I don't pay utilities and have the internet connected to my apartment- but I had to supply my own computer (shock horror - all other jobs have supplied me with computer, sometimes both laptop and desktop! Plus car and staff - but I guess I can't have everything ) But I have a 4 room apartment, a teachers canteen (the food is better in the students canteens so I often eat here!), a bar across the road, and great students. The university also takes us on monthly subsidised travels and helps get cheap fares for where we want to travel. Used my Experts card to get cheap fares for friends and family. No complaints - automatic pay the 10th of each month - no hassles about return fare home either.

I haven't got a phone in my apartment, except one that goes through a switchboard.....I haven't got a computer or internet in my apartment, either. I am going on a "work to rule" strike until I get it......starting after they renew my resident permit, etc. If that doesn't work, I will sulk. That'll get em!!

I don't pay for power, but I have a set limit. The only time this matters is in the winter: the block heater takes up my whole allotment (sp?), so I have to unplug it when I heat up the shower or watch TV.
Hey, does anyone's town suffer from blackouts? We get a bunch here, lasting an average of 20 minutes (the longest was an hour and a half). No one is sure why, and we can't tell whether it's the whole town, part of town, or just our block.
