ditto! I just "need" too many things .... you'd be surprised at just how many things you don't need. You miss them for the first two weeks or so, then you forget all about it. Bring photos of your family though....just a few..you'll need them from time to time. ANd your students and co-workers will be curious about them.

Yes, I am being RUTHLESS. One backpack allowed.
I went through quite a physical and emotional ordeal before I came to China. Organising transport to get to the tip and also emotionally not being able to say goodbye to things. In the end a great friend, who for the purposes of this post I will call 'Lovely Packing Nazi'.
LPN and I spent a very interesting 6 hours trying to justifiy why I needed to keep clothes I said I would lose weight in China for (pffffft if this happened) or scrap pieces of paper with numbers I couldn't tell her why I had kept them and the list goes on.
Anyway LPN got me so drunk in the end that when I awoke the next day all I needed to do was vacuum the floor. I'm glad she got me over my hording faze. I'm trying not to get too connected to material things. Makes it easier to travel around the world!

One of those iconic T-shirts from a Yangshuo boutique - you know "People's Republic of Bicycles" printed on the front, or "I am unmarried and happy" (in Chinese).
Alternatively, since Aussieland is now heavily enaged in dumping its overabundant Shiraz production on China, try to win an Australian set of tastebuds for the flavour of a 'Suntime", a "Great Wall Cabernet" or a 'Tibetan Dry'.
Don't forget "Hump" brand coffee beans (from Yunnan - excellent quality!). Goatcheese too is made in Yunnan though it would suffer through the flight from subtropical China to hot Australia.

Don't bother with the cheese. It would probably be confiscated and scoffed by some Customs Wallah!!

Same thing I've recommended in many other threads: Multi-Penis Liquor. If you can find anything weirder than this to take back to show the lubbers at home, I probably don't want to know about it.

I forgot! Pack a lot of socks. The Chinese just can't make a decent pair to save their lives.

She's talking about going back to Old Country, ya hoser. No, wait...may be something here after all. Chinese socks would make great small gifts for people you don't like very much.
