Is anyone near Sichuan? Apart from panda bears and people who don't even speak Pu tonghua? I believe Mich is lost somewhere in between the pandas and those who can't make the difference between the "s" and "sh" sounds So... he's somewhere south of the Changjiang? Or between the two major rivers? Because really, that "s/sh" thing seems to be nigh-universal. Can they tell the difference between n/l in Sichuan?

S and SH, Z and ZH and the tones are all messed up as well! (may be in 5 years since I was there things changed... may be not!) N/L are also misplaced. Every time they said "Zai na li" I heard "Zai LA LI". I remember asking my assistant to articulate it for me - IT EVEN DID LOOK LIKE "L"! Had to have my ex-boss (who is American by the way but just has been living in Taiwan and China since he was 15) to give me a proper explanation (though his S/SH and Z/ZH are also messed up due to Taiwanese pronunciation )
