Now I can see why the option of pooting outdoors is the way to go, can't say I blame the kid. I would poo in the bush or wherever anyday, before I plunked my ass in that maggot infested area.

This is my first attempt to post a photo...but taking pictures of chinese bathrooms is a hobby of mine.No wonder nobody wants to visit me! Those are maggotts folks! eee w. Nobody doesn't want to visit, if this is your toilet! And Mrs Nobody would probably prefer the hotel. But thanks for the invite. ;D Taking pictures of toilets? Well, I suppose everyone needs a hobby. And I think the singapore toilet college is a good idea. Wonder if it counts as a 4 year degree in china, so they can all become English Teachers?

Perhaps when Rayool finishes the definitive manual on tampons he can write the manual of water closet technology.

That beauty was actually snapped at a village in Henan.Nobby...there is no better excuse not to visit than the fact that I live in Handan! Our bathrooms are maggot free...but I've seen quite a few that resemble a chocolate factory.Frankly I'd rather squat over maggots...at least the outside is realtively clean.
How bout a worst bathroom competition?

I think I would prefer the maggots - at least they would eventually eat up the bad bits.
Wading ankle deep in urine with floating faeces isn't one of China's high points, let me tell you. I don't understand how people can eat in restaurants, for example, where the toilets smell like they do. The whole place reeks sometimes. One place on Hua Shan in Xi'an for a recent example....
I can't work out how come Chinese people in general say they are so much cleaner than westerners. They don't shower in the morning, they keep wearing the same clothes, and they stink. And their toilets stink. So far, with limited experience, the further north, the more it smells.
Of course, there are many personal exceptions, or probably most are clean. But seriously, I mean, some of the people I get crowded next to reek of stale odours. Here in the south, commonly of stale clothes, but in the north it was stale sweat as well.
Errr. I should have put this upstairs. Dont want to scare away people.
It's mostly good, guys. Just having a rant.

You're welcome to Xi'an anyday GG. Squat at will.
Bring the princess and mommy too and I'll happily babysit so you guys can have a ...er quality time together.
Most of the Chinese people I know shower/wash daily. And some of them don't. Just like home.
The last couple of days I've had to shower more than once because quite literally I've been pissing myself laughing. Two of the funniest young women I've met arrived on campus and we've been doing ordinary things such as shopping in supermarkets and washing clothes but in a totally new way. One is from England, the other from America. We're having a ball. Life is wonderful. And the Chingrish Chicks are gonna knock Kath and Kim for sixpence.

I meant, of course, that they only shower at night, not in the morning before they go to work or whatever. So they wake up sweaty, put their old clothes back on from a simple airing, and walk around. Smelling. In the north, maybe it is the diet, I don't know, I noticed the smell a lot more.
But then, I am not usually cramped together with that many people here, either.
Seriously, one group (5) got on the bus up to Hua Shan and they ponged of stale baijiu and rank sweat including the woman. It was 9am and one guy was sucking on a beer, and he and his clothes smelled like stale beer too. I felt ill. The guys I had been travelling with, on the other hand, didn't smell at all.
Yeah, I know that most people here are clean, and probably as clean as those back in oz - I live with one who is immaculately so. I was just having a rant. It was noticable on this trip though. Before, only noticed it at random intervals. Hell, I trained in martial arts with many people in China, and most smell cleanly of sweat, not a smell I usually object to. It was just the staleness that bothered me. Bothered Mrs N too.

I didn't notice a lot of smelliness when I lived in the north. Some. I notice some down here, too...
One key difference is the availability of water. In many parts of the south water is abundant almost to the point of nuisance. In the north, though, water is a scarce, precious, and expensive commodity. A great many people in the north only get very heavily regulated flows of water at certain times of the day. Washing clothes is a non-trivial event. Many don't have any bathing facilities in their homes at all...the neighborhood bathhouse is where one must go for a shower. Not something most people can do on a daily or even NEAR-daily basis.

I have waking nightmares about the cans I've had to use in a pinch (no pun intended). Take this net cafe: they replaced the Western toilet because the water pressure couldn't handle the volume. The Chinese thrench actually IMPROVED the hygiene levels.

I keep forgetting to post this question ... here it goes: Err where is the toilet paper?Uber, it's in your pocket. One of those things you don't leave home without. That and your camera so you are prepared to take photos like the one above. They sell travel packs of tissues. One learns to always carry them so one is prepared. Perhaps this is more important for the females in the crowd, but guys need TP outside the home on some occasions. Actually, your body kinda learns to accommodate to doing the 'necessary' at home as much as possible.

Yes, you train your body so that the only necessary thing you have to do away from home is piss. Then you shut your eyes, try to hold your breath and squirt as hard and as fast as you can....a quick shake and aw aaay!!

They sell travel packs of tissues. One learns to always carry them so one is prepared. So these travel packs are the Chinese equivilant to towel carrying in Hitchhikers' Guide to The Galaxy. ;D Err wait a minute... so no reading "Altlas Shrugged" while comfortably performing a number two? Hmm I do have a natural defense ... Nasal Polyps. They block most of my sense of smell.

I buy the scented brand. Take the tissue out of the pack before you position yourself, before entering the facility if possible. Take a deep breath before entering. Hold tissue to nose while in squat position - floral scent masks the other scent. Take another deep breath while tissue is still near nose. Finish business as quickly as possible and depart. I manage this at school now with very little discomfort.

Don't forget to roll up your trouser legs before entering public toilets. Also carrying a door with you would be extremely useful at many places.
