George You're padding posts again. Tich, tich JJL I saw the post. They also offered me a 5th floor apartment. I going to decline and look again. At my house here, I have 2 1/2 bathrooms. All with flush toilets. One with tube tub/shower, and one with shower. I plan on practicing squatting. LE - I have been to China and the 1st public washroon I used was in Beijing. The partitions were only waist high, no door. I was studiously watched by another lady while I did my duty. I have also had to pull up my slacks and wade to a washroom.

George I guess that the padding could be called verbal diarrhea. I know you never suffer from constipation of the brain.

Western toilets are a mental comfort thing. It is something we are used to. BUT ... if you get the runs frequently, Chinese toilets make the process quicker and cleaner, they are good for developing thigh muscles and you will use them everywhere else in China, so you amy as well get used to them in the comfort of your own home!!! With the use of strategly, this won't be necessary. Even at the turn of the mellenium in Japan they had similar fixtures (they've spread to private shopping malls, etc in my tenure, and public restrooms are still old fashioned). By having the good stuff at home, plus, how can I say this, "proper timing," I've never needed to use those things, and I haven't set foot in a Western country since 1999. And if that doesn't beg an "anal retentive" joke from the peanut gallery, then I don't know what will. ;D Edit: I suppose it'd be different for guys. Being a lifelong bachelor, I didn't think of that. Wow. I think I'll bleach my entire body now.

The first 6 months of this year was at a school in Ningyuan County, Hunan and our flat had a huge bathroom complete with squatter and overhead shower which made the job of attending to one's ablutions and cleaning the bog a one step affair.
We built up thighs like weightlifters' (ironic really, seeing as how one of the schools we were teaching at was the sports academy where two female Olympic weightlifting gold medalists came from) and there was certainly no reason not to be in and out in a flash.
Now we are in a new school, and our new flat has a sit down dunny..... bliss!
However whilst we welcome the comfort it provides to our half century old bods, this crapper comes with its own drawback.
Our bathroom can be surely called a loo with a view, as the privy of our top story flat situated in the school grounds which is on top of a hill, has a huge picture window with no curtains and looks out across the river, past the island in the river and takes in the whole CBD of Yongzhou, a scene which invites one to sit and contemplate for hours....which is exactly what my wife does now.
So whereas before I could rely on her to be in and out in 10 seconds, I am now left banging on the door with a bladder bursting with the night before's ration of pijou...

Okay, I never was too good at problem solving. Does the water drain out with every flush? If so, is there a filter to keep the fish in the tank or does one have to keep purchasing new fish? What if a person puts that blue stuff in the tank to keep the bowl minty-fresh? Interesting though. But it isn't in a place where I can enjoy it while in the 'thinkers' position. You guys can't really enjoy it either, if you remember to raise the lid and seat.
Just had another thought (notice the 'edit' rather than the postpadding): I can just hear the fish conversations. "Oh, no. Here we go again. Hold on guys." It would be like living in a whirlpool.

The minty stuff only pollutes the water more, has no effect on Hygeine.
Not all the water drains out when used, goldfish are tough enough to cope. Prolly a screen to keep the fish separat, but really, you could simply put in a two layered tank, inner one for toilet, outer layer for fish, not connected, very easily. But that wouldn't be as interesting to watch, as the fish panic and swim around.
If you look carefully, there appears to be some kind of separator, but since the volume is less than that needed for flushing of USAnian style toilets, I guess that is the screen. More surface area, less hassle for the fish.
Oh yeah, one thing - trench toilets mean that fecal matter is tracked all over by shoes. Can't clean all the bacteria out of the grout, either, so it is very very unhygenic, and a major potential hazard in any kind of outbreak.
