Interesting. Nice work, Nolefan! Given that I'm at an internet bar, don't see how it's worth bothering with tomight. I'll try it on the weekend, though, in the spirit of curiosity. Maybe curiosity about that thread: 20 replies! I'm her mentor- are you bums giving her good advice?

Every single one of them have been absolute scholars and gentlemen but none of them so gentle and wise as you and none will ever replace you Con…

Oh Hamish, such a cynic. I was thinking group hug when I read it and all you can do is run for the toilet. Never mind, Enigma. You are absolutely right about Con and most of the others are gentlemen - when they want to be.

I think maybe the sarcasm didn't come across well on the net.

So Enigma's arriving in Shanghai on Saturday. I may still be too sick to pop up there, and my phone only works in Suzhou. One of you locals gonna be alert on Saturday?

I got a message from her today, she sounds alive and well. Her first week here - you can guess what it must be like...

I met her briefly yesterday...seems like a great chick! I'm currently a bit under the weather, so I didn't get a chance to chat with her for long, but I've promised her I'll show her around. Brave gal, just showing up and looking for work!

OMG!!! So this is China then! Skidded down on the runway in Shanghai about a week n¡¯ a half ago and have not stopped since the captain turned off the engines. Stayed in Shanghai for two days and then trained it to Suzhou. Been here a week now and WOW, what an awesome place! Not really sure what I expected but this definitely wasn¡¯t it ¨C better I think ;D Have met the most incredible people whilst I have been here, including a few of the saloonies ¨C Raoul, Con, Karen, Gill, Amewupp, hats off t¡¯all of ya!!! You have all be so wonderful in showing me around, introducing me to people and places and you have all made me feel so unbelievably welcome, THANK YOU!!! I could not have got this far without all of you (this includes those whome I have not had the pleasure of meeting as yet ¨C Non-Dave, big thumbs up Had tea at Maggie¡¯s the other day (what an experience! - her parents have a truly magnificent home ¨C real authentic Chinese style, the kind you see in picturesque tour books) to discuss jobs and apartments, etc and so far things are looking up. From the interaction I have had with her thus far, she seems like a good somebody; she has been tremendous in setting up bits and pieces for me and giving me tips, etc on how to go about things. Have managed to get a gig in an IT Software company teaching business English (having come from the IT corporate world it is very much up my alley so we¡¯re smiling). Doing a trial period for two months on the bare basics but will put in my time, pay my school fees and keep a positive attitude. Looking for an apartment at the moment, which is a little challenging, but if I have achieved so much in the short time I have been here (with the help of all involved of course), I am optimistic that I will find lodging in the near future. I think there are two major things that have struck me the most ¨C the people and the traffic. First, the people ¨C don¡¯t think I have ever met so many friendly and warmhearted folk in such a short space of time for a very, very long time. Always willing to help in anyway they can and just because they want to ¨C no snide agendas, no hang ups, just good down-to-earth folk. I have encountered the odd one or two that just do not have the time of day for you but that is human nature in any country in the world. Second, the traffic; I¡¯ve decided, he who hoots first and loudest has right of way, the rest just happens with absolutely no logic whatsoever (something I have encountered in a few other circumstances as well). That said, I haven¡¯t seen one accident and none of the cars have so much a scratch on them. When my brother was here, he coined a perfect phrase that IMHO is very apt to the way a lot of things happen here ¨C peaceful mayhem. There are, of course, many, many more things I could comment on but I will leave them for later posts. For now, if this is what life in China is like, I¡¯m game for more ¨C good and bad, bring it on¡

Hey, Cheeky, why? Although you have been here a long time, I guess.
Enigma - Welcome to the monkey house - I think I said that somewhere else too. YOur summation of the traffic situation is pretty true - except there are accidents aplenty, but not so disastrous because of the slow speed as is usual in my country at least. I am still scared when I cross the road though.

Why did the hen only go half way across the road?
Because she wanted to lay it on the line.

Cheeky: where next?

Today, half the traffic lights were out.
One of the most amazing things in my life happens at these times,
Without any kind of control, everyone sort of slows down a bit, then works they way through, including pedestrians and cars. There ain't no jam, just a slight slowing down, then back to normal. No honking above normal, no hassles, very little of anything. Maybe even more efficient than having the bloody lights.
I was very impressed.
Is there something we are missing here?
