I was just watching CCTV9 on my satellite TV and watched the weather report for China. It seemed a wee bit chilly over yonder. -23 C in Harbin??? Not much better for the northern half of the country. Does it seem colder in China than it has been the past few years?
Here in Chicago it's been a record cold winter, I even had a bit of frostbite on my ear. When I was in China I came down with 'Reynaulds Phenominon' which is a discoloration of the fingernails because of damaged capillaries in the fingertips. My building had very little heating.
Stay warm, and if you're in a really cold place, soak your hands and feet in warm water nightly. Don't smoke too much (constricts blood vessles). Get some longjohns.
This is all stuff you don't think about back home, with nice, warm buildings. Save yourself the trouble I went through.

Hey Seth I'm in Hailun, about 3 hours north of Harbin. Yep. It's -23 alright. Strangely it doesn't seem as cold as I was expecting. I'm from Brisbane, and winter is bloody freezing there if it gets below 10C. I admit that I am pretty rugged up when I step outside here, but it honestly isn't too bad. Apparently there is not much snow this year, but the cold is the same (according to th locals).

I don't enjoy going outside here in Dashiqiao, where you can see your breath. But the buildings are warmer.
How's Suzhou right now? I was absolutely hating it those last few days.
TIP: Put a damn toque on! You lose half your heat through your head.
And if you can swing it, don't sleep alone.

Cold? Of course we had it tough! I'm from Sydney but struggled to class in minus 40 degrees one winter in Neimengu... but my home was warmer than here in Henan. What - I know, I should be used to it by now - pisses me off, is students who always assume I just arrived off the plane yesterday, and who have never been there, telling me Harbin is really cold.... Even when I say I've wintered in Neimengu, actually Hailar and Manzhouli, they assure me Harbin is colder (which I doubt... anyway it looks like it's south of Hailar to me.)
I never had a cold in Neimengu... but about one week after I arrived in Henan I was sneezing (and given antibiotics I'm allergic to - another long story. Try telling Chinese people, when you're sick, that you know what you're talking about...)

I am trying to create my own understanding of 'cold' without ahving to look at the thermometer. So far -4 equals 'right eye watering'. -7/8 is 'sinus squeezing'. My studetns tell me it is really cold when you nose freezes. to date the coldest has been -11/12. But sunny and beautiful - but I WANT SNOW!!!! Went to an outside toilet at friends house the other day. Couldn't flush (very embarrassing!!) because the water had frozen around the flush mechanism.

I've given up wondering about the temperature. I know it's cold when everything in the kitchen freezes, and the stuff in the fridge is merely cold. Chinese planning!.....they have decided to put heating in the flats. There are 9 blocks of flats here...the school rents a number of them...at the moment, everything is dug up outside my block...blooody trench across the door...pipes are being welded and lagged....The middle of bloody winter!!

Gentlemen, masturbation works wonders here in China; do it outside and the world is yours, and it's a warmer world!

We have snow!! and the cold to go along with it. Well, enough snow to cover the ground. That counts for snow here. Lotus, I like your definitions of cold. I get the watering eyes, too. If it hurts to breathe, that's cold by my definition.
Con's here and we're touring the old city and the Kongzi temple today. We'll bundle up since it's mostly outside. Of course, the buildings at the temple won't be heated so inside/outside doesn't really count.

Flaky? It snowed in Xingcheng while I was there. Damn, I miss snow. But not as much as I miss summer. Well, Canadian summer- Chinese Spring. I have a feeling that Suzhou's summer will be too much for me.

What don't you understand? The little bit of snow Con saw here made him realize how much he misses snow. (What we got doesn't really count as the real thing compared to where he was born and raised.) However, he misses summer more than he misses snow. (This comment probably brought on by the fact that he is living in a non-heated flat in a part of the country that is currently cold.) And the summer he misses is the lovely balmy Canadian summer, more like spring in China, not the stinking armpit of humidity that Raoul has informed us Suzhou is. Con's wondering if he'll be able to handle it. [Better get the aircon fixed before then, if you don't freeze to death in the meantime, Con.]
So Con, did I understand you? Mr. N, is it clear now?

So Con, did I understand you? Mr. N, is it clear now? I read it the same as you Ruth. Mr. N tends to see things sideways and upside down, hence the constant missunderstading of our intelligent wise statements.
