You're quite right, DS. But he can't help it. It must be tough to be an Aussie and live your whole life upside down. These people from the southern hemisphere just don't see things the way the rest of us do.

Put it in a test tube or petrie dish and it will make total sense to him.

We have maps in Oz that show us as on top, and the rest of you as 'downunder'. Because there is less pollution in our part of the world, we tend to see things more clearly.

Touche!
I noticed here in China that on flat maps of the world China is in the center. With my egocentric North American view of life, I'd never seen a map where the Americas weren't centered. Time for a brain shift.

It didn't make sense because of
1. Excessive Baijiu 2. Snow being viewed positively 3. It isn't in a test tube or on a microscope slide nor pinned down in a lab someplace awaying my razor sharp, well, razors. 4. Con said "But not as much as I miss summer. Well, Canadian summer- Chinese Spring. I have a feeling that Suzhou's summer will be too much for me." Canada has the same seasons as China. It is in the same hemisphere. Only the temperatures vary, just like everywhere else. It isn't spring in China while Summer in Canada. This still sounds weird even while sober, especially in the context of snow. 5. Daytime temperatures during the last few days have been a very nice 17 -20 C. That is a very good reason not to go anywhere near where water is frozen outside of a glass. 6. I don't have to understand what Con says if I don't want to. (Pout goes here)

Points duly noted, Mr. N, and I'm staying far away from your razor.
To further complicate matters, we are living in a country that holds a festival celebrating spring in the dead of winter.

My outlets came online again. I started the A/C heater, but I accidentally flicked on the electric blanket. the outlets all died again. Hope they're back online tonight: last night I slept in my toque!

You guys need to move north where we are civilized and have heated flats.
George, the butter left out of the refrigerator in my kitchen is almost spreadable. A house cold enough to freeze oil solid is cruel and unusual punishment. You must have been very naughty.

It was George! It was George!
Con would like to be naughty, but has to set a standard for his kids.

So if I understand this thread (and that is debatable) in the winter in China you have a choice: 1. live on a subtropical island. 2. Live where it is warm outside and cold inside. or 3. Live where it is cold outside and warm inside. I would vote for the island but then it is too bloody hot in the summer. I will stay with wearing clothes outside and parading around in my underwear inside.

George, You must have been very naughty. Teleplayer, I was refering to George, not Con. I don't think Con studied Naughty in school. George, on the other hand, comes by it naturally.

When the cold hit Beijing, we found out we had out heating system working on... gas. It is quite expensive. So here we are, using ACs. So far it is tolerable. I haven't seen the last month's bill though. I would go for gas - it is kind of more convenient. But hell, I am freaked out - you never know if there is a leak. And especially after we were reassured it was a central heating it's still appears to be gas...

True, Ruth. I tried to teach him a little in Suzhou, but the time was too short.

This morning I saw my breath when I woke up. Landlord's coming tomorrow.
And the canal froze over. It thawed by afternoon, but still.

I went to the kitchen to cook lunch today. The olive oil was frozen solid!! That's bloody farkin' cold!! Your problem is leaving it out. Put the oil in the fridge and it won't freeze. This is my second winter in Hunan and I'm getting used to it but it's still strange to change into warmer clothes to stay in my flat. I only need gloves inside I take them off to go out. It's a little bass ackwards.

I am still wearing just a shirt and singlet and jeans here, sometimes a jumper, but sometimes still short sleeves. A jacket when the wind blows cold.
I might have to work out how to move north in summer, come back here for winter. Hmmm.

They checked my house yesterday and traced the problem to a missing wire in the fusebow outside my door. Today they cancelled coming to fix it, saying the worker could only come during the day and they needed me there to answer questions. So tomorrow, leaving work early.
If they don't fix it properly tomorrow, I'm buying a portable fireplace and 6 stacks of charcoal.

I have full power. Plus they took out the antique fusebox and replaced it. Tonight I can wash clothes, which my students and colleagues will appreciate, and sleep without wearing 3 layers of clothing. Life is good.
