So, I'm sitting here in my coat with freezing hands. But we have electricity Spent 24 hours without it. Water comes on around 5:30 a.m. Not sure when the heat will kick in. Hope the electric company doesn't decide to work on the system again today.

Ahhh the cold, being from Montreal, the cold isn't a bother...we just had temperatures of -26 this past week. What's that you say? -26? That's not bad...Add to that the wind chill factor and BLAMMO!! All of a sudden it's -65+! It's so cold outside that if you were stupid enough to take your johnson out and pee your pee would freeze before it hit the ground, and it's coming out at 38 degrees!

Loop, we know it's cold in Montreal. The thing is, folks there have learned how to heat their living quarters. One can pretty much count on a warm home, unless there is a huge power failure or you don't pay the gas bill. This is not necessarily true in China. People in the north have heated homes when the powers that be decide it is actually winter and turn the heat on for the whole city. Folks further south can heat individual rooms, but don't have 'central' heating. Ask George about the frozen cooking oil in his kitchen. Not sure how he copes with the 'bathroom' duties, and no, I don't really want to know.

George - I am sending you the bill for a new keyboard! The vision of you warming up little bits of you for bathroom duty just killed this one - tea went everywhere!

nope, noone here that would do that...Nobody would, but maybe not... I think... Nobody wouldn't go somewhere where it is dangerous to do that. Nobody isn't that stupid. I like the warmth and the scantily clad nubile young . . . . sorry, gotta go, wife just walked in.

No heat in my bathroom. Showers are fun. I'd love to have a word with the dumbass who decided to leave insulation out of the walls when they built this place.

No heating here in the showers either. It is also hard to shower without actually touching the (freezing cold) walls. Why haven't Chinese people learned about bathrooms in 5000 years?

As I snuggle under my cotton sheet in my threadbare cotton pyjamas, I think of the bloody Summer looming. God I hate Summer. The humidity, the lack of cool Summer clothes, my Winter clothes are so smart and I thought I would lose enough weight to wear the cool clothes, my white skin exposed. I am sorry to be so dismissive about the cold it's just that I hate the heat.
It's not that warm all the time I tried to push the cat down under the blankets to warm my feet the little poo protested, my feet were too cold pushed the dog down no problem, dogs are a lot more accommodating.

I'm wearing short sleeves today in Shenzhen. It's about 22. My room feels cold though. I'm nearly sweating in my office.

I spent last winter in Henan wearing double long johns everyday and gloves in class and felt balmy outdoors, before that 3 winters in South Korea. Where I grew up, central Minnesota USA, the thermometers go down to -40, where the c & f scales intersect and often this time of year, the mercury didn't come out of the reservoir at the bottom of the thermometer. You could spit on metal and watch it freeze.

I've always greeted the first frigid day of winter back home by bundling up and going for a really long walk. I'd do this periodically to clear my head. And like you, Loops, I love snow: we actually had some here back on Friday!
But standing wet and maked in a bathtub, INDOORS, is another thing. Construction principles have a ways to evolve yet.

Yep - it started snowing here last night coming home from the bar where I met these Mongolian (from Mongolia via Xinjiang) guys who invited me to their Mogolian national day/News years Day festival.
Today the world is white and beautiful! Wonderful. I will NEVER live in a place that doesn't snow again!

We got snow a couple of days ago. More than an inch which is lots for where we live. Still here. It's been colder the past couple of days than it has been in awhile. So, will March come in like a lamb or a lion? Or is that only a North American thing?
