This may be an odd question and probably my last as I decide what I will do.
What about laundry? Laundromats I presume?

I just saw an ad here in USAnia that they now make Washers/Dryers that are all part of the same unit...no more taking wet clothes out of one machine and loading them into the other... how long before we'll see them in the Middle Kingdom?

I don't know about other areas but here there are laundry shops everywhere. 1RMB and a piece of dirty clothing comes back washed, ironed and sometimes repaired.
I have a washing machine for jocks and socks, but everything else goes to the laundry. It's good Chinese practice too.
Your school should provide a washing machine in your apartment - make sure you ask. They start at about 400RMB for a brand new twin tub - and I think I saw the washer/dryer combo for about 14,000 in Harbin.

Then you hang it on the balcony. That part took a while to get used to, along with the humidity making it take days to dry. Fortunately, the wife does it. I can't get used to not having the sun sterilize the stuff.

Copy on what N said re sun sterilizing the washing. Sun, plus dust, plus pollution... not so sure on that one. Soon after I joined the saloon the Great Helmsman, (ie. Raoul) mentioned that he bought a washing machine that played "Jingle Bells" when you opened it. I suggested he take it back and get the model that played "Yesterday Once More"

Your apartment should have a washing machine provided. It will be different from any washing machine you have ever used before, but mine gets the job done. Hangers in the 'sun room' are my 'dryer'.
I've not seen laundromats, per se. That is, the kind where you go and pay money and do your own laundry. The laundry shops Non-Dave mentioned are plentiful in my town too.

I'm convinced the best thing to do is hire someone else to so it, or take it out to be done. Then, in time, when you figure things out, take over yourself.
Mind you, I'm far too lazy to take care of myself even back home. But here I can afford to delegate.
