Okay, so I'm about to take all my discs home. I've got about 500 or so; consisting of both DVDs and music CDs. Some were brought here from England, most were of course, bought here.
Question is, should I pack them in my crate that I'm shipping home, or should I take them in my luggage? Which method would avoid them being confiscated by Chinese customs? I've been told there's more chance of the CHinese customs snatching them more than the UK customs. Is that so?
I've got them all in two BIG CD wallets, and one smaller wallet. I could get them in the suitcases - one wallet in each to distribute the weight - I guess.
Anyone got any advice on this?

I'd pack them in the crate.

I've heard a lot of success stories about using the CD wallets. Either way should be OK. I tend to lean- very, very slightly- toward carrying mine in if that time ever comes. I'm hoping it might help to be able to explain that my pile of DVDs is the result of years of living in China. But I may be fooling myself.
BTW, I don't think it's Chinese customs you have to worry about. It's the Customs officers at home...

I kind of agree with you, Raoul, I'd rather have the chance to explain myself than let those leeches take everything for themselves.
Maybe I'll keep them in the luggage...

That's what I'd do.Keep them where you can see them. Some friends of mine have had outgoing packages go missing in the Chinese mail system...I wouldn't send anything of value via China Post.

Actually, I won't be sending anything via China Post - I don't have the money to do that (just sending 2 flat-packed DVDs home cost me around 100 kuai!). My options are:
1. Put them in cartons and load them on the wooden pallet to be shipped home
2. Put them in our suitcases
I might put the box sets and official-looking stuff on the pallet, and the CDs in my luggage. Probably the best option, as I have loads of box sets, and if they were to go in my luggage, I'd have no room for clothes. ;D

I had so many at one point----almost an extra suitcase and I ended giving/throwing most of them away and glad I did...
Unless you are going to watch again they really have little value except as mementoes. Also a new tech will come along soon and they will go the way of 8-track (or at least cassette.) My friends have pay channels, satellite, or download and are not real interested in Asia DVD------except when I showed them some not yet released stuff. Ha ha.
So I would think you are safe unless they are in packaging and you have TONS. Packaging after all is what is really for sale. Don't worry much--even if you lose em---I was wavred through with my 50 or so and my 2 cartons of Chinese cigs (which they worry about more...
gotrta run..

Well, here I am in rainy England and I'm happy to report that all 400+ discs went through customs without any bother. I ended up putting the major 250-disc case in my suitcase, and two 80-disc cases in my hand luggage. Never got questioned about them once. Wish I'd brought more over, now.

Glad you - and your DVDs - arrived home safely. What's the next phase in your life, post-China?

Glad you - and your DVDs - arrived home safely. What's the next phase in your life, post-China? No idea, actually. Viv got herself registered with a job agency this morning, and they're trying to hook her up with the same company she worked for in China - Accenture. How's that for luck? As for me, I'll just try to pick up any old job for now. I might go back to school and learn something else like computing or something, and try a new career...

How about importing pirate DVD's? Pretty much all of my discs are pirate copies, so no problems there.

I meant as a new career, since you managed to get them through.
