My personal project today is to find out as much as I can about the HSK. My contact says it's RMB 200-300. I'm having 1 hell of a bad time trying to figure out my books on my own

My son is studying for the HSK. He has a lot of HSK books and listening material. If you like I could ask him to talk to you about it> which level of exam are you thinking of doing?

I took the exam last December - don't have the result yet, but I know already (basically in the class of go home dummy!)
It is time based so each section is expected to be completed within a certain time and you are generally not intended to return to a section. First part is listening comprehension. The other parts are reading comprehension (all in hanzi) and the final section is hanzi writing.
Apart from the final section it is a computer graded paper.
When you register you are asked to fill out a form stating why you are sitting the exam - I just wrote to see my current language level. The exams seem to cover levels 1-4/5, and then there is an additional one for 5-8. So depending on how you went you would be graded as level 1 or level 5 - whatever.
It was interesting that very few westerners were taking the exam - it seems to have more credibility among the Koreans and Japanese than in western countries.

Thanks for the link, Norad. Now I have something quantitative to shoot for. 400-3000 words is basic? This'll take me a while.

Level 1: The candidate has acquired the basic (low) Chinese competence. The candidate is able to understand simple sentences and express simple ideas and capable of simple communication in his or her daily life and study. A Chinese learner who has mastered about 600 common Chinese characters and the corresponding grammar can reach this standard, which is also the criterion for HSK (Basic) Certificate Grade C. Level 2: The candidate has acquired the basic (middle) Chinese competence that can meet the demand of basic daily life, a certain range of social communication and study to some degree. This is the criterion for HSK (Basic) Certificate Grade B. Level 3: The candidate has acquired the basic (higher) Chinese competence and can fulfill the minimal requirements in Chinese proficiency to be admitted to study in Science, Engineering, Agriculture, and West Medicine in Chinese universities for a Bachelor’s Degree. This is also the criterion to grant HSK (Basic) Certificate Grade A, which is equivalent to HSK (Elementary) Certificate Grade C. www.hsk.org.cn/english/Intro_hsk1.aspx

wo ye . Yikes Level 1 competence is certainly something to shoot for. My goals aren't any higher than that, but kudos to those of you whose goals and achievements are.

Now, why aren't these levels used similarly for English?
(This is a rhetorical question. I already know the answer.)

I took the middle test, Elementary-Intermediate. Man, it kicked my butt! There is no speaking portion, just listening comprehension, grammar, and reading/writing. The listening portion is bizarre, because the questions don't relate to the content of the dialogues. Here's one example:
Man: This letter is extremely important. Don't forget to mail this letter. Woman: Don't worry. I will certainly mail it.
The question: What is the woman's attitude?
How was I supposed to know? I made some guesses, but none of them matched the four words that were given as choices (none of which were ever said aloud -- you had to know how to read them).
I think I should have taken the basic level test!

Hey, that sounds like the kind of questions our poor students have to put up with on their English Coaching papers. Turn about's fair play, I guess. Must be the same people developing both tests.

Cheng gong le! I got my test score back today, and I got a 3, which entitles me to a certificate of Chinese proficiency with grade C. I was relieved to pass at all. Ironically, I got the highest score in listening comprehension, and the lowest in the close test, which I thought I did well on. HOWEVER ... I missed getting a 4, which would have given me a certificate with a B, by one measley point! Considering that I passed, and that I guessed on all the tingli questions, I shouldn't complain, though!

Thanks!
Mmmm ... it's hard to answer your question. I studied in college in 1989-90, and then didn't study Chinese for ten years. I came to Shenzhen in fall 2000, and had one year of so-so Chinese lessons. Then I didn't study formally until summer 2005, when I took an eight-week course.
