Judith here. Born and raised in Missouri, I am in philly at this moment readying to go to Boman School in June or thereabouts. I am really looking forward to china. Ever since I was a little Baptist girl (long, long ago) I would hear the story every christmas time about lottie moon, a missionary to china. They would tell it as they collected our missionary fund offerings -- Many things are different now, except the fascination for China. I am busy scouring the boards for information on what to do now that I am certain I want to do this. I am really, really happy to have come across this site because there is hope to avoid at least a few of the mistakes that I would make without your assistance. and thanks to Lotuseater and Raoul for the welcomes. I will be looking for lots of information -- don't have any idea where to go but probably will stay close to Shanghai until I get my feet wet. Of course right now I want to go and never come back -- but then, I have also become much more familiar with the chinese way of doing things so will mix my boundless enthusiasm with appropriate amounts of alcohol and a wait-and-see attitude. My original moniker was dollylala but one of the things I found was about la-la. too funny. told raoul that it reminded me of grammer school and a girl whose parents thought it adorable to name her patty butts. then there was my great-aunt sophie who married nathan pilla. yes, one must be a little careful about such things, I have discovered.

Welcome aboard Dolly. I have a student who calls herself Daisylala. Another USAnian...hmm, OK, not to worry. We can handle that. Maybe you and the Eagle should get together and submit your questions jointly.

Hi there Dolly, welcome to the Saloon.
I joined up like you - when I was still in Australia about to come over here and I reckon the information and assistance I found here made a huge difference. I actually didn't have to ask too many questions... JJL was asking just about every question imagineable, which provided me with the answers I needed (mostly).
Reading some of the older posts is a great way to find things out, but don't hesitate to ask either!

g'day Dolly and welcome
Unlike you and non-Dave, I was over in China and on a steep learning curve before I wandered into the saloon one night. Haven't left since then, mainly because I handed over my credit card on the first night and the b@st@rds haven't ever handed it back.
The good humour, support, advice and general craziness here is fantastic. It can stop you from going insane.

Have already been checking out Eagle's posts. It gives me more opportunity to sit back and think of witty things to say if he asks all the questions. I think there are many questions I have, though, that will just have to wait until I get there... (what, is that foreshadowing?)

Welcome Dollyodear, would it be OK if I just shortened it to Dolly. So have you got a school lined up or are you still in the process of looking? I think one thing to think about is what to bring that you need and you can't get here. I advise everyone to bring 4 sets of monopoply or even more. They have been invaluble.

Raoul cool song Welcome Dolly, I know what you mean about sitting back and coming up with the witty comments.......... I just havn't come up with any yet. I'm not yet in China heading over next year, but am on the count down 10 months to go I can't wait , ask plenty of questions and make sure you give them all a hard time cos they'll give you a hard time (all in fun of course)

Thanks, MM.
Witty comments are not required for posting here. Take George as an example. He's our largest-volume poster, yet his 4800+ posts are a veritable Gobi or Sahara.
Just go for it!

I don't think the above example is exactly the Nile Delta.

Hi Dolly ... good to see a new face in the saloon ... hmmm? My glasses must be smudged as everything is looking blurry. So, is the new school in Shanghai? or in the region not too distant from that famous/infamous city? You are going earlier than I am as I expect to land in Shanghai on August 20th. Who knows, maybe there can be a saloon party before the start of classes in September.
welcome .... and hello Dolly!

I'll say Hi Dolly, just to be different. Woza's so polite to ask if she may call you Dolly. The rest of us just shortened it all on our own. That means we accept you as one of us without question. It has nothing to do with the fact that we are all lazy typists.
Always glad to have another female at the bar - and a USAnian to swell the ranks doesn't hurt, either. I'm Canadian (by birth) and American by naturalization. I claim whichever country gives me the most kudos at any given time.

Welcome, Dolly! Ask a ton of questions here: remember there are no stupid questions, just stupid Australians. I first came here without the benefit of this place (come to think of it, it didn't exist yet). It could have saved me a lot of grief, and given me a lot of shortcuts. But it has, since.

thanks for the warm welcome, even though none of you mentioned what I noticed after I posted -- that I started a whole new thread. This is something I know about myself -- I am sure to look before I leap, but not too closely.
Have contacted Boland School in Suzhou. Originally thought that I would be coming in June but now I may be able to come earlier. I think I am able to do a work/study to help with costs -- is it worth it do you think? I am glad that Raoul put me onto boland -- my first idea was just to do the internet thing but when I read up on them I thought that it would be a better orientation to come and do the class there -- more time to adjust and they seem pretty helpful.
Thanks to all of you again for all the great welcomes. My drinking buddy is Nolefan; I think I am going to be able to make the adjustment to China much more easily with all of you to help.

Oh, and thanks for the serenade, Raoul.
I remember that when the Grateful Dead decided to play China and everyone was saying "Let's go to China!" that I couldn't even imagine it. Now, here I come. Better late than never.

Any time, dear. Treat it like a Dead concert and bring a lot of LSD along. Or at least some Philly cheese steaks.
