During my time in the Czech Republic I found that many of the women there are attractive. Generally, however, people blow this out of proportion. Its not that the hot Czechs are any hotter or more abundant than anywhere else in the world, but rather the ugly ones, well, don't exist for the most part. What boosts the country's attractiveness so much is that such a massive portion of the girls are in the "decent to good looking" category, compared to America where half of the population is pushing 600 lbs. On top of this the Czech men are apparently not too appealing, per every girl in my exchange program, leaving foreign guys at quite the advantage. Life was good there . Just my 2 cents. And to gengrant... I wasn't sure who Zhang Ziyi was, so I looked her up. Mmmmm, do all those Chinese woman look like her?

C'mon now GG, be nice to the new kid on the block. Let's show him a little of what awaits him upstairs. I typed Zhang Ziyi into google images and did a search. This came up, which is very disturbing. However, after a stiff drink and a bit of a lie down, I continued searching, and came up with this. This is not a hijack, this is well intentioned advice for a young Canuckistan, about to travel through the wilds of the Middle Kingdom. The advice is as follows: 1. If you see someone who matches the first image, run for your life. You are young, aren't you? 2. If you see someone who matches the second image, give her my phone number.

You guys have your heads up your collective asses. Sorry to be so direct but it infuriates me that you don't agree with me. She has been in poo movies her acting skills are terrible. I can't believe how bloody shallow you all are. Mr N good business idea blowup doll that looks like her with an annoying voice in Chinese and English Gong Li is a fantastic actress the woman has a personality.
That is my last word and if I have upset anyone by my direct comments. Good

I can't believe how bloody shallow you all are. uber-(#1shallow)-zilla begs to differ. ;D She has the tantalizing ability to go from, wholesome girl right into a hot ass kicking babe and all with a great deal of intensity. Here I agree, and she definitely has great personalities ;D ;D Ok seriously both great. You need a better, metaphoric, perspective on this. You see it's like spagetti. Sometimes it's good to have the regular stuff and sometimes it's nice to have the really thin stuff. In this case we are talking about some really hot thin stuff

wha happen? i asked about good places to teach, and now its Gong Li and Zyi Zhang versus Michael Jackson? Come back with my thread, you sons of unmarried mothers! Despite her unpronounceable and unspellable name, ZZ is probably the hottest actress in the biz, in terms of do-ableness. But for girls who actually will show you what that's like, its gotta be Kaylani Lei or Jade Thai. Their movies aren't exactly A-list Hollywood, but they have compensating factors.
Sorry to get off topic, but What's living and working in Quingdao and Kunshan like? Does Suzhou have any nature or pleasant architectural features, or sports, or anything like that?

Okay, sorry Mick.
Suzhou has 2,500 years of history, some of which hasn't been knocked down. First, there are canals EVERYWHERE. Second, the city gardens here are renowned. I've only been to one of the inner city ones, but it was fabulous. Third, there are all kinds of flowers that bloom here, at various times in Spring and Fall; the ones I've witnessed so far beggar anything I've ever seen (given where I've lived, that's actually not saying much). Third, there's Tiger Hill, which I haven't been to yet. Fourth, there's TaiHu Lake (haven't been either).
Most importantly, there's Shanghai nearby. But Suzhou's easier to get around in, and way cheaper.
Now, I think it's better to come cold and see schools for yourself before agreeing to anything, IF IF IF you have the money and contacts to get by while you shop for a gig. The latter you've got, courtesy of this here Saloon, but money is- well, you know your situation better than I could.
If you do agree to a job and they screw you, you could always claim breach of contract and get separation. That's if you sig a contract before you come. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES SIGN A CONTRACT BEFORE YOU'VE SEEN THE SCHOOL.
So lining up a gig first isn't that terribly risky. Lining up interviews with a number of places in the same general area, now, that's probably the best compromise.

So are you proposing it's wiser to enter on a visa besides the Z type? It seems like on another unmentioned board everyone is adament about acquiring this type of visa before coming to China... which requires a contract to be signed! I certainly can appreciate the wisdom of investigating multiple schools while on the groundbut is this really realistic for everyone? That gives me an idea for a poll...

Getting a Z Visa doesn't require you to sign the contract before you arrive here - or at least it shouldn't! It just means you have accepted the job offer - subject to the school providing everything they have agreed to in the contract. You should sign the contract after you arrive and check everything out. Any school that won't follow that procedure is scamming you.
The Z Visa is the safest. Anything else is an adventure, not necessarily bad but it certainly reduces your options and makes you rely on other people performing. Everything is possible in China, just make sure you know the score.

Xi'an has interesting history, some good hills to climb not too far away, not much in the way of skiing or scuba-diving or sunbathing on a beach. Centre of the Middle Kingdom so travel anywhere is dead easy. A touch of pollution - but so do most major cities in China. Working here is good - plenty of educational institutions - both private and public. Cheap as well - way cheaper than the big coastal places or Beijing.
