What debate? There's a debate? I thought we were pretty much all in consensus here regarding this issue... Did I say "de-bate"... phew...that could have been a really bad time for a "Freudian Slip".

Yo yo Icebear...nice to see another skater in our midst! I was getting all antsy here all alone...I used to skate in the 80's(vert era) and then I tried street and promptly busted my ankle twice! Now I snowboard..I'm a carve-a-holic...nuthin' better than speed with your face mere inches away from fresh powder...mmm
Come to Suzhou!! I wanna make a skate flick in China featuring Chinese skaters and of course I would need a skater from back home to be my main "actor". Whaddaya say??

The more I hear about Suzhou the more I like what I'm hearing... still I have an inclination towards Shenzhen for the 'party central' aspect as GG put it. Terrain wise I have no doubt that any city of even a few hundred thousand has something to skateboard... unless cities in China are designed in a radically different way (i.e. asbestos instead of asphalt) this is unlikely to change across continents. Especially considering the few cities I'm looking into are up in the millions... Loops, when do you plan on arriving in Suzhou? I definitely plan to do quite a bit of filming in China, I've been neglecting the camera during this past year of heavy school. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ask41KXy2YQIf you're interested in seeing my part from a few years ago. Nothing amazing, and no vert or transition whatsoever, but its still brings a smile to my face remembering that last summer before college. That's what I enjoy about filming, all the things from each session you're reminded of outside of who did what.

Thats because the majority of them are from Suzhou. Beware: they will trap you and do all sorts of evil things to you (re: Raoul's Club Tequila)

I'm seriously impressed, icebear, although I lack the appropriate language to adequately express myself.
As I was watching your video I kept imagining you skateboarding down the sidewalks in my Chinese hometown. Most of the sidewalks are made of paving stones and most of those may once have been laid on the level but are no longer so. Walking can be a tripping hazard. One must also dodge cars, motorcycles, bicycles and any other kind of vehicle you can think of. Sidewalks are for parking. Don't forget the workers with whatever they are working on laid out for all to walk around, through or trip over. If a building is being re-done inside, the pile of sand to make concrete, bricks, wood and whatever will be all over the sidewalk. A new sign going up? Lay it out in front of the building to work on it. And so it goes.
That said, I live in a small city by China's standards. There is a lovely new square (park) in our city where kids roller blade every evening. Must be good enough for skateboarding, right?

Hey icebear, cool video man. SIP here in Suzhou would be great for skateboarding...I have a friend who does a bit and says it's not bad. As far as location goes, of course I gotta second ( or is that third...or fourth... ) Suzhou. Good sized town, but not ridiculously huge....diverse yet homey...plenty to do, and close enough to Shanghai for whatever you could possibly want! ;D I haven't been down south yet, so can't compare. Anyway, my two cents, good luck with the decision making process!

amewupp I'd be interested in hearing from your friend about skateboarding in the SIP. Or even just seeing a picture or two of where he does it, if you could pull off something like that, pretty please?
As you can see in the video its not like I need exotic locals... smoothish ground at a school, back alley, business or parking lot will work fine. Throw in a planter or similar object and you've got hours, days, weeks, months of entertainment. If the ground is smooth I can improvise and build my own 'planter' (been done before, and I bet in China the cinder blocks are even cheaper).
Shanghai's proximity is a good thing, as Pudong apparently is a haven for street terrain.

You write: > Things I'm looking for: > - A warm climate. ... > - A city. ... a decent sized expat population, nightlife ... > - Something less polluted or closer to natural preserves ... > At the moment I'm leaning strongly towards Shenzhen, Also consider Zhuhai, another mostly new city just across the river. It has everything you list. wikitravel.org/en/Zhuhai

Today I was walking through the park that is directly between me and my school and voila! not only are there flat paths, lots of inclines, and clear sailing, but ramps, good ramps, and all kinds of stuff specifically made for skateboarding. Suzhou. Main Drag. Very cool.

Hey Icebear, contrary to my previous opinion, apparently a number of westerns skateboard around. A guy who teaches at another school told me his son does it a lot. The one thing, though, I got as news is the the local trucks suck bigtime, and break if you do anything except roll around carefully. If you do anything resembling stunts or tricks, bring them from home. Just thought I would let you know.

Thanks for the input Nobby, I'd heard things along those lines. Apparently the product is fairly reliable in some cities and shoddy as hell in others. Hmm... seems to be a trend regarding many things in China!
Luckily trucks that are quality last (me) at least 6 months, so I don't have to worry about more than an extra set.

GG, can't load the site at the moment, will check later. I have seen that website before though, it has some good info on certain areas, although it always loads slow as poo for me.

Hope to be there around the last week or so of Woza's summer camp. Maybe we can all hitch up. Late august may be a little late, little N is due mid sept. Want to talk to the consulate in Guangzhou about stuff, too.
