It's all about walking behind the buildings, stepping into dark alleys, there you will challenge yourself with the real China happening in large towns.... To do that you must get off "The Street Bar", "The Silk Road", "The Sofitel", "Carrefour", "Baby Face", ......

I accidentally did that in Manhattan once. Suddenly, ALL the signs were in Chinese, and there wasn't anyone of Euro or African descent visible.

Aaaaahhhh... I think I may have discovered the appeal of dog meat.
Dog meat popular with N. Korean women Wed Aug 9, 4:19 PM ET
SEOUL, South Korea - Dog meat is increasingly popular among women in North Korea because the traditional Korean delicacy is believed to be good for the skin, a pro-Pyongyang newspaper in Japan reported Wednesday.
Dog meat has long been regarded as a stamina food in both Koreas, widely consumed on hot summer days in particular.
North Korea is believed to have a greater variety of dishes with dog meat, known in the North as "sweet meat." South Korean gourmets who have tried the delicacy in the North, say Northern dishes taste better.
"Sweet meat has various vitamins, including Vitamin A and B and is good for digestion problems and fatigue," the Choson Sinbo newspaper said on its Web site seen in Seoul.
The paper quoted a cook at a dog meat restaurant in the North's capital, Pyongyang, as saying an increasing number of women are visiting the restaurant.
"Customers get convinced about the efficacy of sweet meat when they see the skin of our employees and cooks," the paper quoted the chef, Ryu Jong Mok, 47, as saying.
The paper said Ryu also has "resilient and fine" skin.
Dog meat is also widely consumed in South Korea, especially among middle-aged men on belief that it's good for stamina and virility. But women in the South are usually less willing to try the food.
Earlier this week, a poll showed that more than 35 percent of South Korean dog owners also eat dog soup.
Dog meat is also eaten in some other Asian countries, including China, Vietnam, the Philippines and Laos.
Activists regularly criticize the practice and call for bans on eating dog meat.

Lotus..the fetus thing is real.I read a great book called "Stiff:the world of human cadavers" and there was a chapter on this. The author had heard rumors that a womens clinic in Shenzen sold the tissue of aborted fetuses to people who wanted to use it for medicinal purposes. She flew to Shenzen and interviewed the head of the clinic. They told her that they used to do this..but now they sell the tissue to pharmacutical companies who make medicine with it.
Frankly..it makes good sense.Fetal tissue has been proven to have amazing medicinal powers...yet most western countries refuse to explore this avenue of research.

The newpaper article quoted was the one about the Shenzhen hospital. I can see the use of fetuses medicinal use - but it isn't confined to China - my cousins first child was a Down's Syndrome baby and they flew him to and from Germany on a regular basis for a couple of years for injections of fetal tissue to help ameliorate his condition. I have no idea whether it was successful or not. This was 30 years ago!!

In truth I can’t fashion a systematic argument against eating anything that is non poisonous, no matter what it may be.
It all comes down to what we have been taught.
Really, what is a better idea if one is REALLY hungry - eating a dead human body (Even killing a human and eating it.) or dying of starvation? I don't understand why anyone doubts that they would choose to live if they could. There are many examples of circumstances where “civilized” people have made that choice. The famous Donner Party for one.
There is also the religious ceremony involving George and Raoul after the Forum Christmas Eve party in 2003. But, you all know about that. They just took the Catholic Liturgy too literally is all. We burned everything in the old dumpster before the police got there.
As an obese American who has never been more than a few hours from a full stomach, I would initially balk at woked infant. But, if the next few days spelled death from starvation, “Can I get fries with that?”

This apocryphyl small anecdote comes solely from the fetid imagination of what some may have said was one of the finest minds ever to transport dead fish from Gnome to Anchorage in a Barrow. Alas, the ravages of time, the onset of aging and the cumulative effects of Frozen Daiquiris at 40,000ft(and rising) have left this said mind to be about the size and usefullness of a shrivelled walnut. I was miles away from Suzhou at the time!!

I never suggested you were in SZ at the time.
The entire ceremony had to do with Raoul being able, through the power of the potions he was drinking and incantations he and you were babbling to each other over cell phones, to TASTE along with you the small child you had on the barbi wherever your fire dance was being held.
Or was that the Christmas you spent in jail?

If the western world isn't careful, China will outdo them in stem cell research, the most promising line to a truly long and healthy life for everyone - perhaps virtual immortality. They already have a department of stem cell transplant surgery at the local hospital. A whole floor. Not research, treatment. Not to mention the teeth thing.
This is all because of using those aborted fetii? fetuses? and other things like umbilical chords and placentas (ok, no stem cells there, but lots of hormonal stuff) for research and eventually medicine.
You boozers want your liver replaced when you eventually stuff yours up? China Medical Tours. New teeth, new livers and all the dog you can eat. Just contact Nobody's Healthy Travel. Deductible from private medicare.

Yes..this is what I'm talking about. What initially sounds to western ears as totally digusting is quite reasonable if you look at the big picture. I'm a firm believer in stem cell research. So I find it neither disgusting nor ofensive that China uses aborted fetuses for this purpose.I find it more offenive that our own countries don't.

Ahh - well abortion is a whole different issue. And one which is highly controversial. The real problem would be the deliberate induction of pregnancy to create fetuses to abort for food or medical research. Using tissue already 'discarded' seems more of a way of honouring the potential. Bit like using organs etc of dead donors. A gift to humanity.

Sorry, wrongo. Humanity is defined by conciousness not by potential. Otherwise, every woman murders a human every month from about age 13 up to 50 or whatever, and every man murders millions every time penthouse has a new issue.
What about artificially created stem cells (difficult to impossible yet) or in vitro fetus (easy as 1-2-3). We can make them so they would never grow into a human, easy as pie. That OK?
Anyway, they can probably use umbilical chords soon - as long as the research is allowed to continue. Which it isn't in so called civilized countries.
And that would also mean we have to call Pol Pot etc a human. Not going down that path. Although I admit he was an asshole.
Edit: Ooops this was crossposted with Lotus'. I agree with her a lot. This was aimed at saying that aborted fetus 'will be like us ... assholes.'
