Burnout sucks. That is why I am here. Burned out from running a business, the masochistic management (not earning money and lots of wasted time doing stuff for the bloody govt) side not the business side, which I enjoy.
If I burn out teaching, I figure I can go back into business.

Joe what is malign mean. Burn out is when you just can't get up in the morning and go to work. If you can afford not to, then don't. I go through periods of near burn out. But I am happier working than not. Why have people got the poos with Shane or is this too controversial .

Joe, just to commiserate with you...I was fired from Manhattan Kids Club last fall because I questioned the Admin's practices and they couldn't handle the fact that as a certified teacher with a master's degree and over 10 years of experience, I knew a little lot more about teaching than they did. they didn't want anyone challenging their ideas, so they "f'ard" me. So, I found a temp job getting paid better and had more time off...and never looked back. things can and do get better...just keep looking. if you get too comfortable in one place, you'll start to smell like the furniture.

A while back now, I used to work in a supermarket and I couldn't work one of my days anymore. I had a meeting with my boss a month in advance and politely asked permission to be excused and I'd even cover my lost hours on another day.
Well, he was being an ass of course and said that it can't be done and I would have to carry on or lose my job. I told him about the recruitment ban that was on at the moment and told him that it's a silly idea to lose me altogether cause he couldn't replace me, AND we were majorly under-staffed. He didn't care.
He said this to me, expecting me to chicken-out and be his little pet. But I just said "Well, ok Michael, I'm sorry but college is far more important than this dead-end job, I mean, it got you here and you're always pissed off and miserable".
I then stood up and walked out, thanking him anyway; for having me there.
The look on his face was like someone just stole his favourite action figure. Ahh well, if he wants to be a child, he can be treated like one.

So OG, what happened to the supermarket manager? He's got the makings of an excellent private school owner in China. Foresight, planning ahead, the ability to approach a problem from many angles, and always with the long-term welfare of all his staff uppermost in his mind.

Obie, nice one well said. I never have clarity at those times to say something really clever, smart or funny. I am too emotional it is only after I think of the things I should have said. Newbs you are one funny guy.

It could be that I am where I should be now. Back in May I made contact with a former employer, the first place I worked at. I was afraid because I deeply remembered an impression I had visiting this place a few years ago: so small, so familiar, get out! But things have changed, and even though I know this place well, I haven't had deja vu yet: everything is much as I remember, but everything has changed as well and looks different.
To tell the truth, I love this place! I go to a restaurant where the boss has no idea of my name but asks me what I want to eat tomorrow and eventually goes out and buys it (it takes her a few days to set it up). I know my classes are going to be big, and I don't mind--I just want to work well, and I think I can at least make a decent try here.
To tell more of the truth, I've met more basically friendly people here than I've met in the last three years. Some of them remember me from the old days, others are just common people who get introduced.
I'm hoping for a year of challenges and friends, and in this place I think I'm lucky enough to say I might be able to find both.
