And if the current FAO happens to be sleeping with the head of the PSB or is the mayor's cousin's daughter? ? Will you then tell them you don't want to do the additional hours? Doing the extra work doesn't always lead to the guanxi you are hoping for - sometimes instead you will get a beautiful gold pen and chop set!

Or a thankyou note and a lunch voucher.
Or, on odd occassions, undying friendship.

No the FAO is not sleeping with anybody, let alone anyone important. I've heard that the FAO has been burned and critized by any person in a position of power in the school.
Some new teachers have been promoted to headmaster 2 or 3 status and some of the older ones have retired. And as for saying that id I don't get my way will I stop working the additional hours? as much as I would like to say it, I probably wouldn't. Those students had a piss poor FT last year and are way behind- but boy do they write! ok well, most of them write very well. Their oral English level is terrible and well.....
I really can't do anything until after the English Competition. If worse comes to worse in regards to my FAO, I would say that this might be my last year here if they can't help me out.
Anybody know of a job for September 2007?

"I'm tired and I feel ill lately". Health is a good arm-twister: if you get sick, they've killed the goose that laid the golden egg, through overwork. Work it in obliquely, and if they ain't buying, call insick on a Friday, and show up looking like poo on Monday, saying bravely "I feel a little better. and I can't let my students dow-" "It's okay, I've been doing that all weekend. Suddenly it's so cold in here."

But she was promoted to that position - dealing with the waiguoren - and she is still holding it?? Why haven't they demoted her before then? Be careful - she may know people you don't think she knows! Waiguoren dealers usually have some good credentials somewhere because the schools and the authorities like to have everything under control and also a general eye kept on what is happening. This is still China.

Well, at my college, the FAO got ripped into by the Assistant Dean over 'giving me too much criticism' from the student's feedback (He gave me ALL of the students 'advice' rather than just one or two points, - she didn't want me to feel bad about it, when she said I was the most popular teacher, got a very high score etc etc - not that I cared. Chinese teachers must have pretty fragile egos.)
Anyway, she used to have the FAO job before the current one, so there appears to be other factors and hierarchies.
But then, it IS a political position. That always makes things a bit twisty.

I still want to know why you WANT to knock yourself out like this. You have options - give the other teacher additional hours, make her happy, give yourself a chance to regenerate, give your students the best teaching you can, because you are not knackered.

I like working. I always have. That's pretty much it. I love my job, I love what I do.
I don't feel tired during the day, my feet on the other hand....... well why can't China make a size 45 shoe, flat heel with lots of cushion on the bottom?
My FAO, her husband owns one of the hospitals, she is one of those power seeking people who will sniff out the people with power and verbally and money wise cuddle up to them. She is hated by almost everyone in the school for being two faced and just evil. BUT, as you all said this is China. Everyone shows her a nice face and tells her she is perfect because of who she knows.
Damn China and its stuff about face. And here I thought I left all those damn office politic's in Canada.

I am teaching 20 periods (15 hours) a week at the university and am the highest paid of all the FTs here. As you know, I have been teaching for more than 30 years and most of those years teaching 30 hours a week. This is China and it is different. I wouldn't want to teach more than I am teaching - and I am a person who can't sit still, an older version of your typical ADHD teenager - as it would mean that I wouldn't be fresh for the students who are needier.
