eow! pals i'm new here in china and i'm quite havin a dilemma on my visa. i'm holding an F visa right now and it's single entry so by the end of sept gotta go to hongkong or macau for an exit. it just pisses me off to think that i've already paid for the 1st renewal of my visa and for this second i need to pay again. can u please enlighten me about this? im spending mre than im earning with this kind of stuff. point, the school im in right now is a legitimate institution, which according to my friend, has the power to change an F to Z visa. legally, you can't! In practice, it's possible but extremely difficult these days. If the school is legal, they might need you to go to HK with an invitation letter to get a Z visa there and then come back to china to get it converted into a resident permit. By all accounts, they should be the one paying for this... not you! Which province are you in right now?

'Noles, she's posted more info elsewhere on the Saloon. I gather she's been bait-and-switched...promised a Z by the recruiter (aha!) and then the school simply refuses to give it to her...with or without a trip to HK.
A lot of schools in fact can upgrade Ls/Fs to Zs. It's against the rules, perhaps, but it's no secret that in this country connections heavily outweigh the rules anyway.

My school did it for example. Without an issue at all.

sooo glad this was clarified... so, is it more common now for schools to simply give an invitation letter and make the laowai get their own 'Z,' or are most schools still gettin' it done for their FT's? just curious...

As far as I can tell from the ad scans it's still most common for schools to completely handle and pay for the Z Visa/ Residence Permit/ Work Permit. This isn't just some boondoggle, it's absolutely necessary for you to live and work here. The employer should take care of it for you.
My recommendation is that you not accept a full-time job in any school that refuses to provide and pay for these documents. If they're going to stiff you on something this fundamental, just imagine what the other "benefits" are going to be like...especially those that are payable after you've completed your contract.

Schools pay benefits after contracts are completed? Since when?

Yeah. A lot of people DO collect their post-contract benefits with no problems. Unfortunately, getting ripped off on them isn't nearly rare enough....

Oh, I get lots of my benefits paid--only one school tried to rip me off ever, and they regretted it badly--but I always make sure that the benefits are paid to me before the termination date of my contract. I've seen too many places here (including my first school, the one that tried to rip me off) that basically say "the contract has expired, go away" when people went too late to go get their travel allowances, plane tickets, etc.

sometimes it's better to talk directly to the headmaster than the FAOs.
my FAO said it's difficult for me to get my salary this month becasue it's hard for her to find the HEADs and that's feckin stupid! i went one of the headmasters and he approved my request to get my salary before i leave.
