Went for a visit to my peasant farmer friends house. They are in the processing of expanding it enormously - despite both of their sons not living there anymore - one is still in Xi'an but in a supplied apartment, the other in Shanghai, chasing his girlfriend. If they get married he is unlikely to return to a small village to live. But the construction was interesting: New kitchen - with all mod cons? Flour bin The kitchen hadn't been used before so for the first meal cooked in it we made offerings to the kitchen god. 6 candles for different gods, incense and vegetables. It was actually quite moving - and I am sure made the food taste good! The persimmon tree was in full fruit so I brought back a bag of persimmons - my friends now have small bags each - no way could I eat all of this lot! My farmer mate (black pants) and his carpenter buddy. Also spent a few days in Zhengzhou - the yum cha restaurant reflected in the creek. Kids learning to play And back home - here at my uni we start them early on being useful members of society.

Once again, thanks Lotus for posting some "Just photos"
In the second one, the kitchen, is the kettle sitting on some kind of stove? And what is beside it, that looks like three rolls of pink toilet paper?
Only speaking for myself here, but that kitchen makes any shortcomings my kitchen had in Hangzhou look kinda minor by comparison.

The kettle is sitting on a stove and the pink 'toilet rolls' are the clay containers that they impregnate with oil (usually coal oil) and burn inside the stove. It's amazing what kitchens like this actually manage to churn out - for many, many years!!

these 'kitchens' are exactly what they cook with here...
20 litre drums with coal on the inside.
It is amazing how they cook, and the stuff the churn out is incredible.

I have to echo Newbs. Shame on me for whining about my kitchen. And I'm sure the food they cook is delicious.
About the little guy sweeping... the broom is about the right size. I've pondered this before but never come up with a satisfactory answer: Why don't they make brooms with longer handles so people don't have to get hunchbacked using them?

LE, I love your photos. I am sure that there are a few coffee table big books buried in your collection somewhere waiting to be published. With China moving towards the eye of the western world, it will be pictures such as yours as well as video that will speak to the western world in ways that is real and meaningful. Thanks for the photos.

LE, I agree with Eagle and others and hope you have plans to catalogue and publish the moments you've caputred. It wil be all too soon that it wiil be plowed under by capitalists and homogenized by Wally-Word, Carrefore (CArry it away), KFC, MikeyD's and the like.

.... But I think there are a few of us who have these fond imaginings in our hearts! Without a doubt but you and George being the prolific posters with the really good shots get the vote for most likely to get it done from the rest of us.
