OK, so the printer in the foreign teachers' office has been knackered since I got here three weeks ago. I got onto FA about it after about a week and the printer was replaced a couple of days later...with an equally useless piece of poo. Since then, bugger all has been done about it. Now, I use the computer A LOT...I have access to a great deal of online lesson material, and I like to make my own worksheets in Word...at the moment I can't do any of this. I am fed up of badgering the school about this goddamn printer (and other stuff). So, what I am planning to do today is, after class, take a taxi down to the computer market, buy a decent printer and then present the school with the receipt tomorrow. What do you think? It may seem a small thing, but it's symptomatic of the attitude towards getting stuff done/fixed here, and I am tired of it.

Do it. If they refuse to pay you've still saved yourself a lot of grief, made your lesson planning a lot easier, and will be the proud owner of a new printer.

Tell them first, as in "I'm going to the computer market AT 10:00 AM ON TUESDAY to buy a printer for the office AND YOU'LL GET THE RECEIPT."
I once did some direct action with respect to furniture for a house. Which is to say, I gave up and decided to buy it for myself. A friend saw me and decided to translate and at a difficult moment in the haggling took pity, or fright, and called the FAO. The FAO turned up out of nowhere in five minutes flat and took over the buying.

Well, I dropped into Foreign Affairs to lay down the law, only to be disarmed by nice FAO assistant lady in unusually charming mood. She assured me two new Jet ink Printers were winging their way to our office as we spoke, along with the broadband hook up for the second computer we asked for...I'll give 'em until the end of the week (again!)

The leverage: if they refuse to compensate you, you can refuse to let anyone else use it. To enforce this? You know lay of the land, so you know the best tactics.

As George did---it might be a good idea to have your own if you plan to spend a few terms at least here..
It really is crappy. In the summer I asked the FAO to use her printer. I figured if I did my homework and had a list of what I wanted it would take no time at all. NO. I was told I could use the Foreign Lang Dept in September. Bull. To do anything there takes longer than the application process to get hired. On top of it they pass the cost on to the students---at a profit I am told. The other option is to go outside the gate and pay for them. I did this to cover my 1st week---20 Y or so. So either I pay or I pass the cost on to poor students...Tightwad ways here are starting to really bug me...

Yeah....I've got my own printer and scanner....but they won't give me a computer in my flat....(the last school did) I have other things to try to get one, but if that fails I will have to buy one. I won't put my printer in the general office. ...

So, Monkey King, have you gotten 'em yet?

There is one very flash Jet Ink printer provided by the school sitting next to me as I write this. Unfotunately the computer in the other office (which is technically 'my' office) is still an internet and printer free zone, but hey, it's a start!
