I teach primary. To say the least -I absolutely hate it!!! Anyway, the first semester I tried "teaching". Sadly realizing that they could care less. This semester I just want to do really easy, no prep. lessons-something to just waste 45 minutes with the least amount of talking on my part. I just want to make it to June and then get the hell out of this school. This week (all 18 classes) I watched a disney DVD and then asked a few questions. Unfortunately, I do not think I can do this every week so I am hoping that someone has some additional ideas. Oh, and did I say....I absolutely hate it???

Games always work, and they're fun, and they can actually teach something. Duck, duck, goose (ESL Variant) Choose 2 new vocab words from their books instead of duck and goose. Buzz Practices counting - one number becomes buzz. Students count off (one student, one number), but never say the buzz number. Instead, they say BUZZ. If they make a mistake, start again. eg. 1, 2, buzz, 4, 5, buzz, 7, 8, buzz, 10, 11, buzz, buzz, 14... Variations: If they can only count to 20, only count to 20 and then start again at 1. Instead of BUZZ, have them practice a new word from their unit. Tip: The kids will get interested in anything that pits them against one another in the spirit of competition. Boys vs girls always works well (and wastes 5 minutes as they scramble to find new seats on appropriate sides of the classroom). It's also always fun for the kids to sing - but keep the songs simple and repetitive. www.eslcafe.com has some good ideas for games and such for younger kids. Final tip: Don't let the staff or the students see that you hate them!! And chin up... it's only a few more months. (Hmmm... perhaps I should take my own advice?!)

Flash cards are good....words and pictures, on separate cards. Have them draw pictures, and write about them. Then they can read their work aloud. Take a ball into class and toss it about . Teach them to catch and say it... "I can catch the ball" I can roll the ball", etc. There are plenty of things you can do. Your life will be even more "hell"er if you just decide to "waste time" That's not teaching, that' s laziness.
