Okay, return airfare to Canada goes for around 12000 RMB. Oz and America are roughly the same. The UK and, say, South Africa would be significantly more.
Many schools are capping the reimbursement; 7000 RMB is a figure I've seen a number of times.
How much should a school be expected to shell out? This assumes playing out a 12 month contract, of course.

From what I've seen the schools are working on the fares that they can get from China Eastern/Southern/whatever. The sort of fare a waiguoren can get when working with Cathay/Singapore or whatever is considerably more. Also in my case the airfare is one thing, but getting to the airport and having to stay a night there, cos of bus and plane timetables ... well, you're on your own there baby.

The SAFEA contract is supposed to say return air by the cheapest and all land travel to and from home to the school.
Here in Nanning they say that you are on your own, bucko. No flight reimbursement is standard. Working on that later today, I think. I will argue that since I have to go home, then either they give me the money, or a pay rise. See if that works.

I got one way ticket money from both schools I worked for in Nanning last year, one term at each. Both were Foreign Language Schools, one a private / gov middle school & the other a private school / college.
The middle school paid half of the actual written price on my ticket stub, it was a lot more than I paid, around 6,200 Y for one term... I din't show them the receipt from my travel agent as it was only half that, so I actually got paid for a round trip.
The second one left it out of the contract on the first writing but I told them it was a standard thing & after calling the higher ups, the FAO put it in. I think they were just `trying... They gave me 4,000 Y for one term.
I did notice a few FT's that aren't native English speakers in Nanning didn't have it in their contracts though.

OK then.
As long as you are careful not to squeal loudly when your employer screws you back.

Yeah, I got it by asking, too. They folded too easily, should have asked for more.

The FAOs I have worked with don't like the airfare from Australia - I got the whole return airfare from previous university after a little shock acting when they said 'tai gui le".
This one asked me only to buy one way - which is more expensive but a) they didn't understand that and b) I didn't want to go back next Feb anyway. They paid it - not happily even though the price I gave them was not the price on the ticket - didn't want to cheat them. But we negotiatied that they would pay me the amount of money I would have got if they booked the return ticket for me at the end of this semester and I can then use it for travelling here.
Now all I have to do is decide if I am staying here next year or moving on, and if staying, then they can pay me the China-Oz-China amount to play with! Otherwise I have to negotaiate with new position for the Oz-China section.

The university I'm attending doesn't like to bother with tickets from individual countries. Instead, they give a flat fee of $1000 USD for the airfare. As a bonus, during the past few years they've also given it during the first month of the school year (not at the end).
Even then, this was still too short for the Oz - China - Oz ticket I paid for. However, if you only want a one way ticket and decide to stay in China without returning back home for a few years, then this works out in your favour as they'll pay it regardless if you travel or not.
Unfortunately this year, they've decided to pay the airfare at the end. At least they've raised the amount to approx. $1600 USD for 1 year (10 month contract).
PS. As for the OP question, I think it should be a flat fee between $1500 - $2000 USD or the full price of a business return from your home country.
PSS. Oh, what the hell - I may just dreaming but this is what I believe the airfare reimbursement should be like, rather than chasing it down from tight-fisted admins who can hardly imagine what 'culture shock' is like as most would never be away in another country for this long.

If the squeal comment was directed at me,
It was the FAO¡¯s suggestion that I show the finance department more costly receipt, I told him I paid less than was on the ticket. The same FAO that lied that lied to me about them reimbursing my travel money getting there.
So... it worked out that they paid what was originally planned, only through a different route.

I am beginning to realize that if they (FAO or the Dean etc, not FE) aren't squealing like pigs, I haven't asked for enough.
