When is the normal time for the school to offer you another contract if they are going to do it? Or is it like everything else in this country?
I want to know whether or when I should be looking for a new job - my contract runs out on Jan 15.

And nobody, if you want to stay there, and you think that they want you as well, start making leaving noises. In fact, play real hard to get. You might be offered the moon and the stars before too long. Okay, bit of an exageration, but you know what I mean.

Start looking at/making enquiries elsewhere. Don't commit, but have some cards up your sleeve. You could start by telling your current school that you've had some attractive offers, but would prefer to stay with them. If they don't get the hint, its time to examine your options. PS If staying, some kind of incentive [salary, shorter houirs] or bonus should definitely be on the discussion table. But don't get greedy. There's plenty of naive laowai out there.

Our contract has a written 90 day clause that if we or they want to renew the negotiations start 90 days prior to the end of the contract. Gives both sides plenty of room for planning.

What they all said: you'll get re-signed if you truly don't need them. And a better contract to boot. Plus it's a prudent safety measure, in case your school slips into the river or something.

yah, the 90 day thing. Last year our contracts and visas ran out before the school did anything concrete, even though they made noises that they still wanted us. We just kept on working and getting paid and about a month late everything was taken care of.
This year Lei Shan got proactive and wrote a letter stating how happy we were and how we wanted to continue here. Voila. Contracts signed early.

Mr N and fellow bar crawlers, As I debate my jump into your world I have had offers from Beijing U of Technology and today from Hebei University of Technology. BjUT offered 4500RMB, apartment, Chinese classes, one-way ticket. Hebei offered 2501-3500, apartment, Chinese, round-trip. Both have start dates of Feb 2006. So, while not Nanning, maybe you could use for bargaining power if they'll make you an offer. My "wussy" self is holding out for 6000RMB. I know, I know, I'm wet behind the ears , but as comic Judy Tenuto says as she squeezes her concertina, "It can happen!" . I have contact names if you want including a psych profesor from U Maine who taught there, I think is on a director's board, and has recommended BjUT ( I really have trouble with a school whose acronym is BUT ). If I can't be there to buy a round, I can at least dispense my meager job offers that I'm not yet ready to tackle.

Cheers, all, and thanks. Apparently they want me. I will be asking the boss man next week. Apparently it is on the cards, though, the students and other teachers all seem to want me there. Heh, a nice feeling. I may be the only laowai they are keeping, though. I wasn't clear on that point, didn't ask more info, not interested.
Yes, I too have some offers. I will use all and sundry advice, I even know what else I will ask for. Don't think I can get shorter hours since I think I will be teaching (I want to) the same classes, but I will ask for more pay, longer contract, and a few minor conveniences. Maybe my own dedicated room, but that will be hard, I think. I could put a tv and vid in it if I could, and then do whatever I bloody liked.
Just had an interesting although perhaps not a major breakthrough in my teaching too. My life just got easier. I have finally worked out what the problem is with my students. They can already write pretty good english, and their grammar is fine and they can make stuff up as they go along, but they are hard to understand. So, I am going to try running diction classes alongside the other stuff. About 15 minutes each with a few students doing an English competition has worked wonders for their English and their confidence and 'incidentally' they are much easier to understand when they speak.
My mum would be proud - she always insisted on good diction, but of course I didn't listen (well, I listened, but didn't obey her). Now I have to use the bloody stuff, and realize damn, she was right. Maybe I should tell her.
Now, to transfer that to their conversation..............

Hey, Nobody, did we have the same mother? She sounds a hell of a lot like mine.
