I am really enjoying my post-grad lit class. The Department didn'tset a syllabus or books, so I wrote my own, choosing the material I like. So instead of learning the history of a 'famous' author and learning to repeat some passages s/he wrote, we are working on (low-level) analysis - cultural, feminist, marxist etc - of different pieces.
Yesterday I used Jonathan Swift's 'A Modest Proposal" - a piece of writing I find really well done. Beautiful for analysing dominant voice and seeing how it can be used against the dominant culture.
The students seem to get really involved in this way of working with literature and it makes it fun for me. Plus I get to choose material I like and enjoy reading again!!
