Hi Beili and welcome to the Saloon. There are some Christians here; you are not alone. My son is currently in the military, stationed in San Diego. I'm curious - why Ireland for your degree? Also, invite your wife to join the Saloon. We always appreciate another feminine viewpoint.
Amonk, I like that Allsorts analogy.

Welcome Kze! (being Canadian, I'll pronounce it "Kuh'zed" ) What the others said about yer house: given the shoddy exchange rate of the RMB, sending money home's a real bitch. If you've got someone you trust who can keep an eye on the place, rent it out. Ozzie money goes far in Oz. You'd serve your interests better by saving up for the visit/move home. As to teaching kindie, what non-D said. Stock up on a ton of songs, games and activities. The little bastards thrive on doing stuff, but have the attention span of goldfish, so don't expect them to listen for more than a minute at a time before they start staring out the window, fighting and touching themselves. Lesson plans have to be detailed! That said, if I weren't such a tired old man I'd still be teaching kindie. Tremendously rewarding, and pays really well: the least number of laowai are willing to do it, let alone are any good at it. And you can do private tutoring on the side for extra cake. Welcome, Beili! A goodly number of Christians here, although none of them prosyletize (sp?)- to be fair, neither do the Atheists. I worked a year in Liaoning- how are you coping with Jilin's winter? A tad chillier than California... If you want to keep up the reading habit, don't buy a DVD player. I've just about ruined my mind completely. How are the bookstores up there for Anglo-type books?

Alright....I'm that dude from California...Jeremiah, 23. Been in Suzhou a whole three weeks and out of the accursed States for over three years. Hooray for me and anyone else fortunate enough not to be there right now. I've been living in Europe for the last couple of years doing what I'm doing now, traveling with a backpack, show up in country, find a job, save enough to get to the next one. I've lived in England(rubbish, sorry blokes), Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, Spain, and Holland(Amsterdam). Don't feel like listing my past occupations, just as much as I'm sure you don't feel like reading all of them... so I'll stick to my specialties... Professional Soldier and Tour Guide... I truley live by my mouth and ability to read and navigate other people's minds. The latter is preferred cause I'm a peace loving vegetarian hippie now and I like loving people and not killing them. I'm staying in Suzhou for the next nine months.... hopefully I will see you around in the local bars, I don't really drink but it'll give me an excuse to get out of the house and put down my pet rock collection (kidding). So shoot me a line if you have any questions, comments, cares or concerns all that jazz or noise....Im a people person and try not to be a hermit.

Welcome to the Saloon, RG. We're all pretty much laid back relaxed here. You can nurse that glass of iced tea, as long as you like. If anything in here strikes you as interesting, feel free to join in. We don't bite. Much.

Good to see you onboard Gnome. The beer truly is coloured water - we just don't ask what it is coloured with. The civet burgers are a bit better.
Come and play with us more often!

Lotus! Please make sure people know you're joking! It would almost seem like you're impugning our fine, all-natural beverage products; bad for sales. Excuse me now- the keg's empty and I gotta take a whiz.

I'm Clover. A new member here and I've joined because I want to pick everybody's brains about living in China. I'm not there yet but departure date is quickly looming on the horizon.
I'll pass on the beer but thanks. Apparently I have a drinking buddy so I'll wait until she's here to do a taste test.

Clover?
How many leaves?
NEVER taste the beer here.
Go straight for the barrel with the snake in it. I don't mean the one we pickled George in. The one with the anaconda at the bottom. THAT is the drink we always give people who are about to come to China. We use it as fuel in the table lanterns as well.
Keep one hand on your wallet, and don't go in the bathroom alone.
Want to sit by me? Hmmmmm? I am responsible for protecting females here.

Eh... thanks, Hamish. I think.
I've been reading some of the threads about living and working in China so I'll try not to be a pain on the monitor and ask questions that have already been answered.
And I'll sit by you Hamish if you keep that anaconda in the barrel where it belongs... and your hand out of my handbag.

Welcome Clover, Keep an eye out for Hamish. He's been known to lure new people into bad investments in Chinese ant farms. Forget the beer and have some baiju instead. So, when do you leave for China? I'm finally getting there myself in just a few days. What a beautiful feeling Crimson and Clover over and over

Welcome Clover. Fire away with the questions. There's no such thing as a dumb question, IMHO, and when you ask anything here you will get an excellent mix of good advice and banter.
Where are you come from? Hoganland, or somewhere in the third world?

Hi, and welcome, Clover,
This place is brilliant, though a little crazy. A great source of knowledge and advice (when all the alcohol isn't frying their little minds).

Welcome Clover. What a lovely name. PM Lotus for your key to the Ladies Lounge. Don't worry about the guys. They are (mostly) harmless. The snake in the barrel thing is not a joke. Common enough here in the Middle Kingdom. Potency or something... or to make you toss your cookies on the way out of the restaurant. The lighter fluid comment isn't a joke either. You will understand once you have your initiation with baijiu (literal translation - white alcohol). Ditto what Newbs said on asking questions. Someone here will have an answer.

There's always a party going on in here somewhere - and if you can make your way through the slurred speech there is great advise to be uncovered!
So when do you arrive and where will you be?

Hi everyone,
I'm brand new here. My name is Mimi (female) and I'm 22 (for a few more weeks at least). I live in the US, in central Florida, and plan on heading off to China next year. I'm still making a few decisions, but things should be wrapped up shortly.
There is a good chance I'll be getting my certification at the Boland School in Suzhou, which is how I found this board (needless to say, I will be paying all tuition and fees IN FULL well before I arrive). So, look out for the many questions I will have about both the school (I believe I saw some posts from graduates) and the area.
I had given up on Teaching in China forums months ago, but this one seems to be of the "good crazy" variety, instead of the "scary and mean crazy" I've previously encountered.
Sadly, I might not fit in here as tequila makes me puke. But if you let me have some whiskey, I'll be alright.

Welcome to the madhouse Mimi! This place is definitely different to all the other forums. The advice (and alcohol) flows freely, and there's always some interesting topics to be found. Plus, the collective knowledge of the group is phenomenal, so ask away, and I'm sure any questions you have will be answered.

Welcome Mimi! Glad I guessed right. Rest assured that while a number of us are scary, and a few of us are mean, other than George and Hamish none of us here are scary AND mean. I am Mr. Suzhou. and I've learned quite a lot about the Boland School. If I can help on either score please let me know. Whiskey's cool, too. Tequila is strongly encouraged but not required. Your aversion to vomiting tells me you aren't Australian, which is also pretty cool. Cheeky! Baby! What ya drinkin'?
