A horse, that has galloped for 3200m a bit faster than the other 23 horses or so, and whose name Newbs will never have heard of before, but suddenly I and 20 million other Hogans will, with hindsight, become experts and all knowing about said horse.
Lotta talk here about Efficient that won the Derby yesterday. I don't know the first thing about horse racing but even I could see that the jockey, Mick Dodds, did a damn fine job. 300m out he was on the rails, boxed in about 2 lengths behind the leader. Saw a gap, went 4 or 5 wide, and ended up winning by 2 lengths. Only a 3yo and the Derby is only 2400m. Still, it looked like it still had a lot in the tank at the end.

And you are going to miss wearing a silly hat, eating dry chicken and drinking cheap champagne?

As a TAB operator's back home. In the lovely thing known as PubTAB.
Chris and I sure as hell aren't missing the cup the year!!!!
People who assume that operators only work one day a year, as this is the only time they NOTICE TAB's accross the state!
People who come in with their children, not understanding why we don't let under 18's bet. Asking us who the winner will be, you know, we're on the tote, so we have to know. pffft.
people with no idea what they're doing. Compelte maddness everywhere.
Staff having to deal with, 'um, sorry I've never done this before' over and over again. 'yes you bloody have, you were here last year!!!'
People backing the favourite that is paying $2.60, and thinking that they have a clue about the racing industry. For the following week, the winners from the cup come in and bet some more, thinking they have a knack for this game.
They also can't understand why we're not 'nice' to them after cup week.
you know what? Cup day I'll be nice to you, I'll take you're money, because I won't see you until next Spring carnival...but right now, you're asking me ridiculous questions as a main race is about to jump. You're annoying the hell out of me and getting in the way of my all year round punters!!!!!
Listen guys, it's a field of 24 remarkable horses....go a couple of mystery bets, that's your best chance. I've seen many a person break trying to crack the first three over the line.
And also, please, another suggestion... be nice to all the operators out there who are slaving away behind the jump. Put your bets on the day before. Saves a lot of drama.
If you do win? Fantastic, hold onto your money...We'll see you the first Tuesday of November in 2007.
here's a bit of a funny...A woman came into the TAb last year and said, 'oh, i didn't think you guys would be open today, it's Cup day. You're working on a public holiday.'
Whoa??? sweetie, we're the REASON there's a public holiday today!!!

Anyone notice the irony that one major country in the world has a horse race on the very same day every year that another major country has another kind of race every couple of years?

And I'll bet (it is after all a day for betting) that per capita more people "turn out" one way or another for the horse race than for electing a leadership base. Very interesting irony!

From our special correspondent at the course sitting in the comfort of his living room, 20km away.
Japanese horses 1 and 2. Delta Blues and Pop Rock. They were neck and neck and there was daylight between them and the rest of the field.
Yep, I was pretty well on the money there.
Mich, I rarely go into a TAB but I can sympathize with you, I bet you'd meet some live ones on Cup day.

Yasum. John Letts doing his traditional horseback interview with the winning jockey was amusing. The Jap jock had enough ESL sense to repeat the key phrase of every question put to him, eg: Q:It must be an amazing feeling. A: Amazing Q: When did you think you had the race won? A: Race won.

Oh come on! Who (of the Aussie's amongst us) has never been in a school Cup draw and despite pulling the horse who came last three years in a row, never, ever thought. Yes! This year it's mine! ..... So. No it wasn't. There's always next year.
I have never ever backed a winning horse. Not once. But I had a girlfriend who backed the winning horse at the Bendigo Races and won enough money to buy a new car. It was the only time she ever backed a horse, or gambled for that matter, and she picked out the winners name because she closed her eyes and stuck it with a pin.

I work on the pretty names theory and it seems as good as any other. One year I did manage to get both 1st and 3rd in the work sweep - not enough to buy a car, but enough for a good dinner and bottle of wine with a friend!
