I could have enjoyed using this information!!
Promiscuity 'breeds better babies' November 02, 2006 AUSTRALIAN researchers have found that a mouse-sized marsupial with a promiscuous sex life breeds much healthier babies than her monogamous sisters.
A team of scientists based at the school of botany and zoology (BoZo) at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra, has spent the past two years studying the sex life of the brown antechinus.
The brown antechinus is a small carnivorous marsupial, about the size of a mouse, which belongs to the same family as the Tasmanian devil and the quoll.
The research team, led by Dr Diana Fisher, found that promiscuous females of the species were more likely to give birth to healthier offspring than those which had mated with only one male.
“Scientists have developed many theories to explain why some female animals have multiple sex partners, whether it's trading sex for food and protection, dealing with infertile males or avoiding the negative effects of inbreeding in species that can't recognise their relatives,” Dr Fisher said.
“Another theory is that mating with multiple males would result in sperm competition.
“This means that males with the strongest sperm are more likely to become sires and father better quality offspring.
“Until now this theory hasn't been demonstrated convincingly.”

Does this mean that women will engage in multiple activity during ovulation? Interesting. I wonder if anyone could convince the women of our species of this theory?

And the men they are married to to be totally tolerant of it!

But it's not just the females........ "Reproduction Sexual maturity is reached at 11 months, with matings occurring during the same 2-3 week period each year in any one locality. Mating is timed so that lactation and weaning coincide with the spring and summer abundance of food (invertebrates). Brown antechinus produce anywhere between 4 and 12 young per litter. Gestation lasts for 30-40 days, with weaning occurring at least three months after birth. During the mating season males gather in forest treetops in large groups (leks) where females can come to choose a partner. Both sexes mate with multiple partners, so young from the same litter may have different fathers. Because males have little confidence in paternity (if they are the father or not), they will often leave the maternal nest whilst the litter is young to stay with other females."
Unfortunately........ "Life span Males live up to a year, dying within a month of mating. Females can live up to 3 years"
Too much m'kaying can do that!.......................................to an antechinus!!!!

Well, maybe that's why marsupials didn't make the grade compared to placental mammals on the rest of the planet. Reminds me a bit of the old bull. "No, son, lets walk down there instead and mkay them all."

I have an identical photo of this wee beastie. About 2 seconds later, he was munching on my finger! they have needle-like teeth, and they sure hurt. In regard to the quoll: on our botany field trips in the summer, the students would often put a few pieces of meat near the camp fire, and watch the quolls zoom in and take them. It was even funnier if they were interconnected by a piece of string. Watching quolls have a tug-of-war helped pass whole evenings!

>If you used your ears, maybe you used the wrong equipment! Haven't you ever heard of aural sex? “The United Nations is an uplifting experiment, dedicated to raising the standards of living in Africa, the consciences of democracies, and the price of prostitutes in New York.” - Frank Dane
