I was incredibly brave this week and took myself off to the dentist. I have been very bad since I left Oz and not been – so was a bit wary of the outcome. The dentist looked in my mouth and told me that the work previously done was very good, and that very few professors here could so such neat work – which did NOT reassure me – who had taught her??? Anyway, she did a nice clean, polish and check up for the princely sum of 85Y. She did find a tiny spot that needed filling – so I ventured back today for that.
Today I had the filling done and as she promised, zero pain. But it was interesting that instead of having stuff on the ceiling to keep people occupied during the process, this surgery has a TV – which seems to be set permanently to the Chinese soaps. So I could watch those while everything was happening – and so did the dentist and her assistant. At strategic points in the story, all work would stop and we would keep up with what was happening.
Dental surgeries here don’t have separate rooms for people – I was seated in the window with all passers-by able to take a quick look at what was happening. Other patients came in, the process stopped to give them a quick x-ray and some advice and they all said hello to me.
I'm almost considering having caps (crowns) done. Anyone know the pros and cons of this?

If I am to have any dental work done while here, I will definitely take myself off to ShangHai where there is a Canadian dentist attached to the expat medical services (only three hours away). Otherwise, I will wait until my next visit to Canada.

I had crowns done in Wuxi - 3 crowns cost me 350 RMB each - 1050RMB. A dentist in Canada would charge that in Cdn dollars just to talk to you and then charge you for the crowns. I had the least expensive crowns made - they are white like my teeth should be. The more expensive ones are gold and platinum.

Mich if you find a dentist from one of the military hospitals you'll be fine.
I had a root canal treatment last year and the work was done in private... apart from my chinese son who couldn't bear to sit next to the water cooler while mum was in the chair.
Since then I've had a few visits for fillings and a replacement crown ... the original was done in Australia and gave me no end of trouble. Until now.
If you want to come to Xi'an I'll give you my dentists number. He's a great bloke. His work is top of the range and costs peanuts.

Ahh - that's good ACJ - you found his number again, 'cos last time I asked you, you said you didn't have it any more. I'm happy with the dentist I have found now, but maybe in the future if she leaves, I'll ask again for it.

I don't have his number. I know where his practice is. As I told you, LE, Dr. Hu wei's practice is located in Jiatong university and all you had to do was rock up and ask at the gate for directions. I also recommended you ring or visit the Military Hospital (which is the one you are editing papers for, isn't it?). The Military University would give you his phone number.
My Chinese son goes to him once a month to get his braces adjusted so I'll make sure he gets the phone number.

I got a new tipoff from our very own Phyllis (can't remember her new handle) on a Japanese dentist here in town. I need 6 caps and a crown to BEGIN WITH, and probably more fillings than I have teeth, so I'll be there at the next paycheck. I'd have to bundle around 50 to 60 thousand kwai back to Canada to get this done there.
