I can tell it's becoming winter. The oil sachet in my fangbian mian is solidifying. Today is officially 'turn-on' day for the central heating in Xi'an - although as of this minute - it hasn't happened. The government tells us when it's cold - not the temperature. Maybe they've changed their minds? But - I WANT SNOW!!!!!

Two weeks out from the Australian summer, and we have hail, torrential rain and grey skies in Melbourne currently. George, can you please send some of your sun my way

Lotus, I'm surprised! I'm also in Shaanxi just a couple of hours from you.... the heating started here last night, but it'll probably take a couple of days to fully kick in....feels lovely! Icy cold here, the temperature dropped around lunchtime when we all went home, we were hit for 6 when we walked out. Then again, I'm much closer to the mountains (but not on them) so I guess snow won't be too far away.... Great......

Ok, guess you all need a dose of real winter. It's already hit minus 22 overnight here and although we've been blessed with heat since October 1st, it's averaged minus ten in the daytime for a few weeks. We're told to expect minus 30 - 40 this winter.

Winter is coming. My students are already in layers in the classroom with the odd one wearing fingerless gloves. And the teacher? Well, I am still in short-sleeved shirts. The sun was shining and it was a good 14 degrees this afternoon. They tell me it will get VERY cold (maybe -2C) and they are worried that I will get sick - LOL! And I love going for country walks even when it is -25C in Canada. It is only too cold when it is windy and -35C.

The forecast for next week is sunny and mid 20s. Melbourne's weather, if you don't like it wait 5 minutes. It'll change.

Eagle I am from Canada, Ontario to be exact. I have lived in Alberta -40 and Nova Scotia and even Winnipeg. I have NEVER been so cold as I was last winter in Wuxi. It is unbearably cold in the classrooms - unless you school heats the classrooms - very rare!! All the stores have no heat. Your apartment will have no central heat, just the airconditioner to warm some of the place. Areas with no heat will be very very cold. The buildings aren't insulated so the cold radiates into the rooms. Showers give a new meaning to COLD. I had only one room to heat and still used an electric heater at floor level to keep my feet warm in the evenings. In Canada, we heat our offices, cars and houses. So we go from cold to warm to cold. Here we go from cold to colder to cold. The students are right - it gets cold. I didn't wear long johns last winter and the students couldn't believe their eyes. They had at least 5 pair of long johns on. But, my feet and hands and 'me' got cold and it was soooo hard to warm up.

Getting cold enough here that I actually have to wear a jacket sometimes now, at least outdoors in the evening. Unfortunately, we've apparently hit the calendar date whereon my corporate clients all turn the heat up full blast....
I'm also deep into my annual change-in-the-weather cold, which typically covers the months of October, November, and December. And sometimes January.
As Eagle is discovering, sometimes this region can be colder than the far north. We can't compete on actual temperatures outside, but down here it still gets down around the freezing mark...and it's very wet and windy to boot. There's no steam heat here, as is ubiquitous in the north, and many stores, restaurants, classrooms, offices, etc. have no heat at all. Also, the buildings here are not as tight as in the north...doors and windows are not installed as carefully, there's less (or no) insulation, and so forth.
But basically, I'm with Lotus: I could stand a bit of snow once in a while. Here, if we're lucky, we get one flurry that looks pretty on the upturned eaves and the cedar trees for a couple of hours...

Problem here of course, is that everything is built of concrete...and any heating first goes into the concrete, and anything left over goes to us. We have had our heating on for two weeks now, and inside is warm and toasty.....not like the bloody mongrel flat last year!!

Well it's definitely COLD here. We sprinted passed -10 weeks ago and it hasn't retreated yet. We've had a few good days of snowfall and the days when the snow isn't falling and the sun is out - it's still not warm enough to melt the snow on the roofs of the buildings. Almost everyone is in their "surgical masks" (used to keep the face warm). The wind from the mountains feels like it's piercing the skin sometimes. And they tell me to expect it to get worse!!!! WHAT THE ...... !!!!!!!!!

Old Man Winter knocked on my door about 2 weeks ago....temps got down to low-60s. But is now unseasonably Autumnal. Mid-70s in the daytime, with similar humidity. Drat. I was looking forward to unpacking my woolies and blankets. Guess I'll have to wait a while longer.

By the time the nasty cold of January and February hits I'll be in sunny Dongguan where it's about the same latitude as the smug ones from Florida and Bermuda.
Meanwhile, we've had heat here in Xingcheng since Nov 2nd. On the 1st the landlord and a couple of big guys came to disconnect our heating system from the rest of the building. My honey managed to convince him not to do that. Turns out, you have to pay the heat bill for the entire season, up front. Since we are leaving in a couple of months, the principal didn't want to pay the fee. Tried to convince us to use the air con for heating. It's in the living room and we didn't think it would manage the whole apartment. Coulda bought space heaters and racked up the electric bill, which the school pays, but we offered to pay half the heat bill and that satisfied everyone.

Well, Beijing is weird as usually. I wore warm underclothes just for 2 days and now I am back to wearing jeans on bare legs and one thin sweater with a knitted over-jacket (thick though). If it is sunny I can see some people undressing till nearly t-shirts. And like 2 weeks ago it was damn freezing and last week we already had some frost on the rodes after... the rain.
THAT'S BEIJING, BABY!

It's starting to get chilly here in Dongguan too. It hit 18 yesterday and this morning I wore a light jacket for about 10 minutes. Brrrr...
I did my time in the -40 north and I'm not missing the cold at all. That's what pictures are for!

Word up: my new apartment gets chilly at night. And my beloved bthrobe has disappeared in the move. I need to get me those quilted pajamas to lounge around my house in. DS kindly gave me a couple of block heaters before she moved away, and Raoul brought up the terrific idea of getting down coats made by a tailor. Think I'll grab Wang Chung and see if we can get a group discount sonewhere. I bought a grampa hat today! Toasty warm scalp... and I look suave.

Picture please!!! Are they the ones with ear flaps and fur around the outside? I have what I call 'ear condoms' - knitted thingy that goes under your chin and hooks over your ears to keep them warm.
i'm sure I look just spiffy in them! Gave them to friends of mine as well.

I also know it's winter because I have broken into my supply of TimTams and started to eat them in the totally intelligent belief that chocolate warms you up! Plus I am into the vegemite on toast. Another warming food for nibbling on late at night. BUT .... our building does not yet have the central heating on. The students dorms do, as well as the classrooms. But the FAO tells me there is a glitch for our building, so it's still 4-5 aircons on full-time.

Saw those ear/chin things when we were in Shijiazhuang. I think they make the wearers look like elves. Picture please.
Con, get a full-length heating pad for your bed. Nothing cozier than snuggling into a warm bed when the flat's cold. Okay, I'll retract that. I'm sure you can find someone cozier than a heating pad. But it's still a great thing to have to take the chill off.
