The best bed warmer is your mate...only you have to send them in first...so they can warm the sheets up. All I've seen in sunny Inner Mongolia are the small, round electric heat warmers. Fortunately, it's hot in our apts., I usually keep a window open (and we're way past ten below) and it's too hot to sleep with the quilt over me. I think I prefer this cold to the damp, rainy cold stuff but I may change my opionion when it hits minus -35.

>just had my worst asthma atttack since i was 3 years old... That's what happens to tropical people like us when we spend too much time in the icey northlands. You need to get a job further south. subtle hint - Guangdong Province - subtle hint Thought I'd miss out on winter here, but found frost on my car the other morning. Isn't it interesting that the same people who laugh at science fiction listen to weather forecasts and economists?

They are promising forecasting snow for tomorrow. Yehaa!! Should I stay up all night just to watch it happen?? Queenslanders aren't all that used to snow. Can you tell?

Lunatic - frost?? We lived in Port St. Lucie for four years. I think we had frost three times in that period.
Solongtinik - are you okay now? Asthma is very scary. Take care of yourself.
Meanwhile, in Xingcheng, another sign of winter: those annoying plastic strips have been hung in the school doorways. Love getting slapped in the face with one when it's frozen. Ouch!!! The classrooms are stuffy and hot - 70 kids crammed in elbow to elbow, heat on, windows closed. The hallways are cold - often windows open, exterior doors left open with only the plastic strips to keep out the chill. Perfect conditions for getting everyone sick. Why can't they forget about the plastic strips and just close the doors? I think they leave the doors open for ease of student movement during rush hour, but the plastic slows people down too. Other countries manage without them... and people learn how to open doors to go out or in...

The plastic strips were replaced by thick pieces of canvas and it's no fun getting slapped with one of those in the face. We're in the minus twenties overnight and it didnt warm up much more than that yesterday in the sunshine. Hardly no snow so far, it's been too cold.

No sense having the cold without snow. That's just not right.

There's enough snow up here to keep me excited - you have to remember Kcanuck's a Canuck...I'm from the top half of NZ...
It snowed up here a few weeks ago and everything was covered. But now, apart from the odd fresh snowfall here and there, the snow has been chipped away so the roads and pathways are clear.
Last night I checked out our temperature and yesterday was supposedly a low of -25C and a high of -15C...Brrr.
And like Kcanuck said, we have double-layers of canvas hanging in the doorways...by the end of winter they're disgusting - greasy and dirty...and then it's really rotten to get hit by one. Never noticed plastic strips. We use them in NZ to keep the mosquitoes and flies out...

I've got a huge thick sweater on today, what with the constant rain. You'd think I was in Vancouver! This is the first time in Suzhou I can recall seeing my breath.

>Lunatic - frost??
Only on the car. Metal and glass can radiate heat away quite effectively and ice up even when the air temp is significantly above freezing.
>We lived in for four years. I think we had frost three times in that period.
It gets a little colder away from the coastline (I'm also further north). Usually, real frost on the ground doesn't happen here until late December or early January. With luck, I'll be in China before it happens.

Con - you saw your breath? Wow! What bar were you in when this happened? LOL. Yes, this reminds me of Vancouver where I lived for one wet winter. I wore a jacket over my short-sleeved golf shirt and felt comfortable. I was wondering if I might yet have to buy a pair of thin gloves for when it does get cold.
