A meal in a restaurant, as a guest of Chinese, and NO TOASTS. Didn't hit me until we were home that this is what had happened. A private student invited my hubby and me out for dinner. Dad was working. Mom brought a (female) friend. Mom and friend chatted together in Chinese and my student, my husband and I chatted together in English. Occasionally the two groups would interact. The restaurant didn't have cold beer so we opted for soft drinks. I'm wondering if it was the lack of beer or baijiu, or the lack of other men in the room, or some other factor I haven't considered that contributed to this toast-less dinner. Anyway, it was great to drink when I felt like drinking, rather than having to respond to a toast any time someone ELSE felt like drinking. Also, Crippler was wearing a t-shirt . "Aren't you cold?" We were having hot pot and the room we were in became warm and steamy. By the end of the dinner my student had removed one sweater because she was so hot and the others were praising Crippler for being so clever.

And no morning after headache! Definitely a bonus.

It's happened to me a few times when I was down south for some business lunches. I was almost freaked out by it because in every other instance, there was a ganbei onslaught.

I'd say no toasts at a business lunch would be even more unusual.
