Eeek, I am useless trying to explain things but I shall try....Bittorrent is a platform, like XP (for e.g.)- you cannot use Microsoft Word until you have XP (or 98, etc etc....). So to use Bittorrent, you MUST have a program to actually download things FROM. There are apparently various programs, but I use Torrentspy (www.torrentspy.com). I have downloaded several songs from here, also the movie 'High School Musical' (which my students LOVE!). If you have Bittorent downloaded corrently on the computer (the box with basically nothing in it to begin with, and has a little white wave on green background in the corner), just go to www.torrentspy.com and search for what you want, movie, artist, song etc. When you have the right one click DOWNLOAD....I need to warn you though, downloads from there seem to take FOREVER....give it a couple of days or so, no last minute movies!! I hope this helps....when you click download, it should automatically open your Bittorrent on your computer, have the name of what you're downloading in it- may take awhile to check your firewall....if you are in a hurry you can change the priority of your file- go to Torrent (at top), Priority and select high, medium or low. Not that it seems to make it any faster . Can anyone suggest any better torrents to download from??

Ok.. here is a step by step: 1- download a bittorrent client ( I recommend azareus or utorrent) 2- install it 3- find torrent files of things of interest in torrent trackers: demonoid.com , thepiratebay.org , mininova.org, isohunt.com .... 4- download the torrent file to your computer 5- open the torrent file with azareus or utorrent or any client of choice. it should start downloading the movie/song/whatever notes: - pay attention to seeder/leecher ratio. files with more seeders download faster of course - please don't shut a torrent file until your ratio is 1. it's considered good torrenting manners. - become part of a community ( I enjoy demonoid) so that you develop a good upload/download ratio and have access to the good stuff ask if you need more details

When you have the right one click DOWNLOAD....I need to warn you though, downloads from there seem to take FOREVER....give it a couple of days or so, no last minute movies!! The speed mostly depends on how many seeds are available for a file... so obscure ones will be difficult to come by. When downloading new movies or TV shows I frequently download at 100kb/s, which gets you a whole movie within a few hours, just as fast as would be possible in America. Of course your location within China and internet connectivity can act as limiting factors on the speed.

I'm currently downloading on limewire and was wondering how bitorrent compares, it is better. worse or same? I'm speaking of access to programs and quality. I frequently download the wrong movie or some hand cam version from limewire and often lack resources for downloading a file.

Programs are easily found on BitTorrent, especially if they've been released within the last year or two. Quality for programs has always been fine for me, but I've heard rumors of some laced with virii (but just rumors). Movies are the same deal - recent, means they're easy. If you're downloading anything that hasn't made it to DVD yet it will likely be a handy cam recording - except in rare-ish cases of award screener DVDs leaking. Generally the torrent file will say 'handicam' in the title if this is the case. My preferred torrent site is www.torrentz.com/ since it searches most of the major trackers. If I'm looking for something random, like any new music or movie, I'll browse the categories at thepiratebay.org/Always keep in mind the number of active seeds on a torrent. I can't compare directly with Limewire as I've never used it, but the only reason you'd have to use an alternative Kazaa type of program would be for porn or specific, individual songs.

Some of you will have problems if you are behind the schools LAN as I am. I find best results with uTorrent and my favourite torrent site is Demonoid

I LOVE Limewire and I've downloaded massive amounts of stuff from it. Between Limewire and stuff from my own still-largely-untapped CDs, my Radio Free Raoul collection alone has over 800 songs and 2 days, 5 hours of non-repeating music. It's a bit of a hassle. Limewire is quirky and it takes some shepherding to get stuff down, especially entire albums and movies. It takes additional moves and bookkeeping to import Limewire songs into iTunes. But the quality is mostly fine, and I've gotten a mountain of much-loved music that would have otherwise been inaccessible to me. I've also been treated to a lot of obscure stuff I never thought I'd hear again- Jon Anderson's Olias of Sunhillow, Captain Beefheart's magnum opus Trout Mask Replica, Eskimo Opera performances by The Residents, and so on. One serious hazard of these programs: if you have one and a fast internet connection, as I do, then your friends will also want to come over and download stuff and you will soon discover that they have terrible taste. My sweet, sweet music is even now polluted by stuff from bands whose performers have multiple non-ear piercings, and band names like "Infected Mushroom". An even more serious hazard: Limewire can be used by others to get control of your computer. Be very careful using it, and be careful to disconnect it completely when you've finished downloading. I have no problem with people uploading stuff from my Shared folder (and, since I am a veritable avatar of excellent taste, I get a lot of uploads! ) but I don't just leave my system up all the time for uploading. Even better: I use the ZoneAlarm firewall, and I keep it on Full Metal Manual Control at all times except for programs I know and trust completely. Nothing gets in or out without my express consent. With this, I've never had a lick of trouble using Limewire, but I have friends who have had serious problems with it. ZoneAlarm can be downloaded free from MajorGeeks; link is in our Links page. If you want to use one of these programs, especially Limewire, if possible sit down with a friend who is an experienced user and let them give you some tips in both usage and safety.

If you want to really bolster that count look into Soul Seek. After my freshman year of college I hit 5000 songs - 13.4 days of music - and haven't downloaded a whole lot since then. Not sure how it runs in China. www.slsknet.org/

Yes Raoul, I have been using limewire for years and I like it a lot. But, as you may know my keyboard is busted and I can't copy and paste words into the limewire search bar. And I can't key into the search without a space bar. And this piece of poo computer has no player, no anything....and I can't seem to download anything to put on it, as it keeps rejecting everything I try to do ....and UG HHHHH........... I hate PC'S.

where are you getting them from?
try some programs from the pirate bay and specifically those listed as having a bunch of seeders and leechers. it may well be that your default bittorent port is blocked by your ISP/school

Meanwhile, computer keyboards cost about 25 kuai here and work fine with either laptops or desktops...
