Last week one of our foreign teachers, we have 3 in total, did a midnight run. I am told that he was found in a motel room on Hainan Island. I am not sure who called to let the school know of his where abouts. It was either the police or the hotel owner. I knew he hated it here and has been talking about leaving since he got here, I don't really blame him, although he should have held out for one more month to get his air ticket, hydro funds, travelling bonus, etc. What I want to know is....will anything happen to him, that is can they force him to leave China, can they force him to pay the 2000 dollars that is stated in the contract if you break the contract? Obviously he will not get a recommendation, which I think is all they can really do to him. But, the other foreign teacher here says he is up poo creek without a paddle.
Does any one know any one who has pulled this kinda poo?

Not really certain about this but from my understanding - his residents visa is based on his employment at a certain place, so no employment, no residents visa, so he is then here visa-less, so able to be deported.
Don't know about the money situation at all - but it would be possible he wouldn't be allowed back into China once he is deported.
What are hydro funds?

JJL is from Canada In Canada the majority of our electricity is from Hydro Electric Generators. People in Canada, especially from Ontario call electric power 'Hydro'.

Canadians simply can't distinguish between the concepts of "electricity" and "water". Despite the best efforts of their government officials back in London, every year thousands of Canadians die from electrocution during their annual bath. On a more serious note: was this guy actually arrested or detained? By police in another province? This is technically possible but it's the first time I've heard of an actual case of it. Most school owners/managers simply shrug, say "Oh, no, not again", and move on. And police in other provinces will rarely be motivated to take action in a case like this unless actual criminal charges have been filed. This owner/manager was apparently: 1) Really up on his hind legs over this one, and 2) EXTREMELY well-connected. This guy can indeed be fined, detained, deported, forcibly sodomized, etc. as well as barred from ever re-entering China. Other things are possible, too. In China, if you are well-connected enough then the rules, legal statutes, even the fundamental laws of physics no longer necessarily apply to you. I can't officially endorse doing a midnight run, but I will readily recognize that there can be times when you have no choice. I have done one myself. USUALLY, you are OK if you relocate to another province. However, the only 100% full safety lies in being outside of China.

I know lots of people who have done the run. Not to put anyone down, but most of the runners have been American (7 in the last five years), 1 Canada, 2 Europe and someone from somewhere else. Some left because of SARS, and one stupid head said that because he got paid 30 minutes late the school is in breach and demanded 2000USD and packed up to leave.
Morphine Mark. I remember him. He went from doctor to doctor getting perscriptions for morphine, then going to the Chemists and getting the stuff. It was a ball when the dirty bugger was deported. Escorted all the way. He claimed that he should be able to get the breach as it was the school who let the PSB know about his- well.... extra activites, and how he was stilla ble to teach.
One teacher, her mother was very ill and she wanted to go home to take care of her mother. Her school here in town said no. So she left most of her stuff, and left a note. She told the school that she needs to be with her mother right now and she will be back in a few months. The school was pissed, and when the teacher came back the school tried to nail her for the breach. Was a pretty big event around here. In the end nothing happened.
Anybody else have some good stories of people (or yourself) doing a run?

Hi guys,
Well I found out it was the hotel manager that called. However, noone has given me any more details, they will not let us know, big secret I guess. However, I do know they immediately went to his computer to retrieve information. So, my next question is, is how do I get rid of anything I have entered in this computer.
I am used to just having my laptop so this was not a problem for me last year. I am not a spy or anything, but I don't appreciate anyone eavesdropping on the things I have written on this computer. is clearing the history good enough, do I also need to clear all my book marks.
Missi, lol, it sounds like you have an interesting crowd there. Have you been at the same school for the last 5 years? Also, did the guy who got paid 30 minutes late receive the cash? HMMMM

Keep your computer clear if you have things you don't want read. Back up the stuff you want to a portable hard drive and keep it well-hidden away from the rest of your computer when not in use.
Delete the files, run the disk clean and defrag utilities often. Download a Cleanup program (MajorGeeks, seen in our Links page, has many free ones), keep it on your external hard drive, and run it often as well.
It's almost impossible for the average user to make old files completely disappear. But you can make them very, very hard indeed to find.

JJL yup, same school for five years, we've never had a runner, we've had teacher go home early, but only because of special circ's. The foreigners here never cease to amaze me.
That dumb man. I tell you, it was the ninth month of his contract, and as we all know (if you work at a high school) the chances of you working all of the month of June is small. Maybe 10 to 15 days. He had to wait about 2 weeks to get the full contract money. Airfare, travel, medical, bonus..... nope this loser wanted to pack up and leave. He was to get like 13,000RMB or something. His school called around and I think four of us helped the school out, but we got paid through the nose! 175RMB for one 45 minute lesson. We were socked, but nice to receive that added bonus at the end of the year.

I second Raoul's advice JJL. Keep anything personal or sensitive on an external hard drive or a USB disk. You could also look at having a stronger password system on the computer. There are lots of free programs that will do that - and hide the drive/folder until the password is entered.
And when you leave (hopefully not as a midnight runner!) reformat the computer hard drive - or replace the hard drive with a new one and take the old one with you!
