Today I was told by a German friend that the Chinese Gov't has enacted new laws that enable them to arrest and imprison foreigners for 2 weeks - without allowing them to notify relevant embassies, family or friends. Apparently a German national was arrested in a massage parlour and detained this way. The story according to the German Embassy was that yes the guy was in a massage parlour that did offer extras, but had not and did not intend to avail himself of the extras. When he was arrested he was in the process of having a perfectly legimate massage.
The first run through of the laws included that Embassy/diplomatic passport holders were NOT exempt from this process, however, the outcry was such that that particular clause was rescinded!
Mr friends felt that the information was credible given that the two sources she had it from were fairly official i.e. from Embassy itself and then via a German offical meeting .
Might be worth checking your own Embassy.

That is not a comforting thought. I'll definitely be checking into that.
