If you're working in China for longer than 6 months you should really have a Z visa. The school will take care of this for you. In order to get a Z visa you'll need to have a medical exam, and the school will have to submit paperwork to the government on your behalf. YOU CANNOT GET A Z VISA ON YOUR OWN.
From what I understand, getting a Z visa these days from within China while you're here on another kind of visa is pretty difficult. You may need to leave China in order to invalidate your F visa.
So far, it's next to impossible to get a permanent residence card. This summer, China introduced a new kind of visa valid for 5 years that foreigners can apply for on their own. This is the closest thing to a permanant residence card that we can get right now, but I have no idea how to go about doing so. You might want to check your country's embassy information in China, or do a google search on it.
If it's a foreign resident's permit you're looking for, the procedure for this has changed as of November of this year, and the foreign residence permit is included as part of your Z visa. Where I have a little green book that says I'm allowed to live in China, you'll have only a visa pasted into your passport that will say the same.
Good luck!! I hope you find this information helpful.

I gots me one of these elusive animals that gives me virtually the same rights as a chinese citizen but with the ability to travel in and out of the country at my whim. No, I am not married to a chinese person nor have I ever walked the streets of Palm. No, I do not own property in the Mainland of the Branchland of China. No, I have not been here but a little over two years. The key element is your employer. Working for an International School for ex-pats kids (read NO CHINESE) is one element. Another has to do with your qualifications. Also the level of guanxi between the principle (note the spelling, not a typo) of your employer and said government buffoon is the final and most critical of this recipe. Getting one on your own will not happen. It looks good on paper and soounds great but like everything in China, there is no truth in advertising even from the fat boys in beijing.

thanks for your help!!
all information is appreciated.
from what i have heard from the visa department at my school is that i do not have to leave to get it invalidated. they can help but it changes a few things.
i will keep you guys posted.
going back to the states in february but my visa expires the day after i leave. i would prefer to have it taken care of before i leave. i have too much to do back home to be running around trying to do visa paperwork.
merry christmas

hi all. heres an update.
i got my z visa going and all is well!! hurrah.... i figured out some stuff on my own, talked to some other laoweis I know here in beijing and the office was really good in helping me. although its a pain in a butt to get everything done.
I have found out that with money you can do anything in this country. that includes buying your visa straight out. of course you will pay twice the price.
corruption can be your friend.
