gosh i cannot believe i said that. hahaha
ok if your coming or just arrived in beijing there are a lot of things that i would like to share with you.
1. bring toilet paper with you no matter where you go.
2. learn some basic phrases and listen to the tones of words.
3. be prepared to pay more than what the locals do for some things.
4. watch out for pick pockets. never leave your wallet in your back pocket.
5. the subway can be your best bet for transportation but man its way crowded most of the time.
6. the pollution here will get you sick for the first time
i am just getting over the worst chest cold i have ever had.
7. people will stare at you in beijing like your some sort of statue in some cases but mostly its from the people in the countryside. locals are used to foriegners.
8. girls - this one is kind of strange. if you are not looking for a gf then you won't have any problems but be warned that some ladies here are only interested in taking you for a ride. sex, money, visa, looking good to have a white guy on her arm, to be cool. these things do not of course apply to all chinese women. that would be terribly if it were true.
but to give you an example....
on the subway every single day. i will be standing there on my way to work. minding my own business.
there will be a woman with her bf or husband embracing. during the embrace with her lover she would look over at me and give me the eye and smile. now this is true. i have seen this too many times.
i dont know why they do it but it seems they are kind of cheap.
women will also look at you but once you catch their eye they will look away very fast and be shy.
9. communication - its best to know some mandarin but you can use body language , have someone write stuff for you in chinese(location of your destinations).
10. food - if you are eating out on your own and cannot speak chinese its not simple. many places have pictures of food on their menus and you can just point to it. others do not. kfc, mcdonalds(blech) are all over the place.
last but not least
money, can buy you anything you want here. if you have a desire and can pay for it? then someone is willing to find it for you.
cheers, have fun, be safe and remember your a guest here so dont be stupid and break laws. you dont want a visit to a labor camp now do you??
