Someone claimed that, in order to be admitted into other countries, INCLUDING China, on a tourist visa, you must also have a return ticket in your possession. I don't want a return flight: I'd have to set it for exactly a year after I arrived. Is this bullpoo, or will I have to come on a Type-Z to get away with a one-way ticket?

What is the difference in price between a one way and a two way ticket? You cannot upgrade your L visa to an F visa within China anymore like you could only a year ago.. although you can get a 1 year multiple entry F visa.. Z visa is a different story. What I am trying to say is that immigration/visa laws are changing all the time in the great PRC. If you have to buy a return ticket in China it will cost you much more than the difference between one and 2 way, and usually more than a one way will cost coming into China.. Keep your options open.

Relevant for Oz. Definately. I had to buy a round trip ticket, however, mine was so discounted that a one way was nearly the same price, plus I get to use the other half anytime in teh next few months, so I can change the flight to somewhere useful if I like. Heh. Or just lose the extra if I don't use it.
I don't think it has to be a return ticket, I think you just have to be able to leave the country, or have permission to stay in it. I also think maybe the oz govt wants us to come back, but that may just be wishful thinking.

Hey Bond, How long are those open ended tickets good for, and what if you don't use it by the deadline.

I need some advice please. I have just returned from the travel agent and she informed me that I cannot enter China with a Z Visa unless I have a return ticket. I do not want to buy a return ticket, does anyone have any info on this. She told me to get a hold of the Chinese Embassy in Toronto, just to make sure. It is quite difficult getting through to the Embassy without actually travelling there, so if some one out there knows the answer could you please let me know.
I see Raoul said Old news Con, but I am not sure in what way this was meant.
Thanks

I have been in and out many times on a Z and have never been asked about return tickets. I believe it is possible that your agent is full of it.

Thanks Hamish,
That's good to know, the first travel agent I dealt with never mentioned anything like this so I was kinda wondering.
What's up then, do they want to get you on an extra flight charge? She says, hey even if you just come back for a week, the cost is around the same for a one way as it is for a to a two way. Sure, but what she fails to mention is that, the cost may be the same, but she neglects to mention the ticket back out again.

Probably the travel agent hasn't heard of a z visa, or doesn't know the conditions. However, two single tickets is a hell of a lot more expensive than return, while a return open ended is a hell of a lot more expensive than a return short period. For example, my return would have been less than a single, with the discounts I got, but I wanted the possiblity of return which runs out this month if all went belly up. I blow about 200 aus for the security.

Not sure Bond, but she seems to know, she just moved here from South Africa. It wouldn't just be 2 single tickets. First off, I am contracted until next September 1st, she knows that, so I it's likely I wouldn't be able to make the return. Therefore, the way she explains it, I need to buy a return now, take my chances, then according to her, return for a week because of government regulations and then buy another ticket to get out of here again. So in essence it is paying for 3 ways altogether. Hmm, and I guess , at that point she would want me to buy a 2nd return ticket. Anyway, the point is I do not want to come back within the years period, or so I think Glad you had fun in Xian!!

I second that. It's pathetic what travel agents don't know about China. My wife's friend is coming for a visit next month and her travel agent tried to talk her out of it!She said it was no place to travel alone. When she insisited her agent told her she would need a letter of invitation to get a tourist visa!

Adding to the chorus. Your travel agent just wants to sell you a return ticket. This is complete nonsense.

I alway come back to China on the tail end of a two way. They have never asked for my ticket in all of the three times I have entered the country.

Thanks all,
I am going to try and book off the site Raoul suggests in the info area. I have never booked off the net, but the prices seem decent. Much lower than anything I've come across at the agencies here in Canada.
