Guess who got a residence permit without having a medical!
The permit's one of those new sticker jobbies that goes in ones passport, but I think skipping the medical was just a matter of the FAO being too irritated to organise another one.
I've heard several things about these new stickers. The hearsay goes that the residence permits count as re-entry visas, and they allow for leaving a job without a release letter, even when going to another job. Can anyone confirm or deny?
What I can say is the permit does not specify a residence. It could be in a computer somewhere but it's not on the sticker. All the sticker lists is purpose of residence. And there was a strange conversation with several ladies at the hotel desk.
See, this school provides four room hotel apartments as "apartments" and there is some low level red tape to go with that. I had to show the passport and sticker as some kind of check-in. Then the desk clerks and their boss were trying to explain something to me about "two times, you come here two times by plane," and the rest was in Chinese. Oh, for a modal verb! I worked out later "You can come" is what they were after. In their opinion the permit allows at least one exit and re-entry.
Costs 400 yuan, though.

Did you have to pay the 400Y? Mine sticker worked well at Shanghai on the way back from Aus. Of course, the Airline was rushing us through to catch a plane. I think they might have hassled the Immigration bloke a little. He seemed a tad bemused. I have been told it is multi-entry.

Probably in the end I will pay. They expect me to. And I just feel wrong, y'know, holding out on them like this. I mean, I've got the passport and the sticker and I've promised to pay, and I know I'd be really helping them out...

The stickers must be pretty new as I was issued with a Green Book for this semester when I swapped universities - plus a new red book. But I didn't have to pay at this university and merely waved my previous medical stuff which they didn't want to see. Which is sad cos I wanted to show someone again that I am medically assessed as sane.
I figured that once you are in China they believe you must have passed the medical at one stage or another and whatever who have picked up here is indigenous and so not a threat to them.

Having the green book also means that I travel without my passport - much safer! I use the green book for everything and so far have never had any difficulties. Even managed to use the red book once at the airport.

We got the fancy dandy new improved one as well. And, didn't have to pay. There was no medical this year. Guess the school figured that is we were signing on for the same bucks this year as last that we deserved the break on the price. But then we didn't pay last year either so....
