I guess this should go here. 9th ed. of Lonely Planet (China that is) has just been released. At least in Oz, don't know about the Middle Kingdom but it shouldn't be too long. The front cover of the last ed. with that lady singing, did nothing for me and seemed to me to be about as Chinese as the Taj Mahal.

I don't know who compiled the Lonely Planet info for Beijing in the edition with the singing lady, but whoever it was wasted a few hours of my time with their crappy directions.
I always hacked out the sections of the LP that I was going to be using on any one trip. Ended up with a fat stack of pamphlets by the time I came back Stateside.

The new cover features Qin Shi Huang Di's terracotta warriors.
And the new LPs' interior designs are quite a departure from previous editions.

I bought Lonely Planet Australia to give to a Chinese friend travelling to Oz. When I read it I hated it! Layout and info was almost useless. Read more like a diary than anythng that was going to be useful to take to places, and didn't seem to follow any logical pattern in finding places to eat and sleep etc.
I have MAJOR hassles in destroying books - I was a librarian in a previous existence. But I have managed to allow my daughter to take a cast off LP and tear out pages, then give them to me to take with me on travels. Totally impossible to do it for myself!

I know how you feel, Lotus: cutting up magazines makes me feel like a book-burner. But then I remind myself that mags are 75% ads, and that I'm just gleaning the kernels from the chaff, and my scissors snip a beautiful tune! ;D

This is too funny, I am kinda bad, but guilt consumes me and I will never do it again. I was working on the craft project and I just couldn't resist the images of my Time Life, Great Ages of Man series , boo hoo, I am a certified heel. On the other hand, I am constantly ripping pages out of magazines, I have collections of pics I love, colours I love, food design I love. I don't feel guilty about the magazines, but I sure do about the books.

There was agreat article on LP in New Yorker a while back. Was an interestoing bit on the Aussie guy who started it. Thailand was the first LP.
What critics say ---and I agree--is that LP creates a certain world. Think of the book/movie The Beach. LP will write about this beach and it's unspoiled beauty. In 6 months it will be overrun with tourists leaving behind their junk. Or even a hotel, bar whatever becopmes a different thing after it makes LP. And somehow it doesn't feel very adventurous to use these things. Generally you can find the good things in a place on your own.
But I have mixed feelings---it can be a nice thing to have arriving in a large strange place.

Paid a lot for a LP in Beijing after we'd been there a week. I was disappointed. I learned more about stuff I saw by buying postcards and books at the sites, and taking pictures of the English signs telling about the sites. (These I use later to refresh my memory, make lesson plans, tell to the folks at home, etc.) This is the only LP I've ever owned. I guess it's good as a guideline, but certainly not a comprehensive guide. A Chinese friend is so much better.
