What's the most unaesthetic phenomena you have observed throughout the kingdom?
My vote has to go to the ankle stockings.

Ankle stockings are pretty bad; I would add, those Frankenstein boots, some women wear in the winter. It must elevate them a good five or six inches. Also, I see this more where I live, men wear these simulated black leather jackets, and reminding me of underworld hooligans, which they probably are. The white ceramic tiles.....yeesh...... a few weeks ago, I went to a vocational technical college here, and it was just recently built. The library looked like it was built with nice red bricks. I walked over there, and soon found out after touching the image of cement, that's right, it was those ceramic tiles.

You mean 'kitsch', of course, Professor. The ankle stockings are bad, all right. They can make even the sweetest young thing look like your granny from the knees down. Ugh. I also don't like the Assrammer TM shoes with the long exaggerated points that ladies wear here. Loud plaid suits (a la this week's cover picture) are pretty unsightly as well. I still think the King of Kitsch, however, is my snowglobe containing a golden bust of Chairman Mao; ingots of gold replace the usual plastic snow. It just don't come much uglier than this.

And why do the restaurant employees go on parade outside their restaurants. Is it some sort of team building exercise?

Nope - got it wrong - the really most unaesthetically pleasing sight in the entire Middle Kingdom is the pile of papers and exams I have to mark!

And why do the restaurant employees go on parade outside their restaurants. Is it some sort of team building exercise? Ja, it's supposed to be a team builder. And a discipline builder. And exercise. So it's good for the restaurant and the employee; I'm sure the publicity it generates genuinely never enters a manager's mind. If he has one. This phenomenon isn't normally unsightly, though...just weird.

You can't see it very well, but she has pantyhose on. The lines are really obvious at the thigh level and the waistband of the hose is w-a-y above the allegedly sexy costume waistline. The bra straps showed, too. Looked ultra-tacky to me. Not sure what the guys thought.

but if one was watching this on CCTV-9, I bet you couldn't even see those 'tacky' lines! I do agree though...the picture is high on the tacky side!

Hiking along the beautiful coastline in Dalian. Three trees made of concrete and meant to look like those trees you see in Chinese paintings, walk a bit further a couple of concrete giraffes made to scale.

They require less maintenance than real trees. Here, in Shandong, we are in love with plastic palms(complete with coconuts) and fairy lights.

Here in Xi'an they are in love with real trees so give them all the water. We get the coconuts and fairylights. Unlit of course because of the power shortages.
