Is it just me or are there more 'hi's in the air lately. The 'hu looooo' count seems to be dropping. Can anyone explain it? I quite like it.

Nope. Not in Xi'an. The hu loooooo still polls the most here. But is change in the air? And what's caused it?

In my school, yes: I put it around that cool kids say "Hi" and the hippest say "Hey". I put a similar curse on "I am fine, and you?" In the field, though, "Hallo!" still reigns.

I also am on a crusade to stamp out"Fine thanks, how are you?".Every class I teach gets a ten minute lesson on alternative answers to "how are you?"The school is amused and confused by this. But I am happy to say that now when I ask students how they are I hear a lot of "I'm OK","I'm tired","I'm hungry" ect.Call it a little victory.

Good one, DeC! My crusade is against "and so on," a cop-out I don't allow in my classes...

Dec, I just did the same! in one class, if they ever say "Hello" "fine" or "you're welcome" they have to sing a song.
Yeah, Raoul, my high school grads abused "and so on" shamelessly, just using it to end a sentence, and so on. Man, I'm getting burned out teaching ever single day, being ambushed with new students and classes, and so on. Four things I'm gonna do on vacation: travel, drink too much, clean my poohole of a room, and change my whole daily routine. And so on.
