Non---Dave, take hard sleeper and a pack of Uno cards. You don't need language to teach people how to play and will have a ball the whole trip. Pay the 10 Y to wait in the soft seat lounge at the station - you will be let onto the train first and then can store your luggage on the overhead racks before the rest of the passengers get on - also under the lower bunk. Try to get the bottom bunk - you can control the window if it's an older train. But you will have to let others sit oon it during the day.
There is no such thing as privacy in any form of public transport in China. Soft sleepers will have cadres tavelling and they can be very rude. Hard seat is more likely to have students and more interesting people travelling.
Have fun!

I enjoy the hard sleeper for people watching.
I get the top bunk so I can put my good things in the back corner where someone will have to actually climb up & reach hard to get to them.
Also you get a great view of the isles laying on the top bunk head at the isle end, interesting to see the people push & rush on & off the train so the can wait...
Try to store your bigger luggage in Beijing & only travel with a backpack if you can.
I used the sit down toilet in the soft car once when I had to sit down... other than that, I think the enclosed rooms in the soft sleepers seem like they might get to be Too small after a bunch of hours.
bring a small bucket / big bowl to fill with hot water to wash with, they have heated water for you, get a cheap throw away kine...
No coffee on board too so...
Should be nice up north these days.... `Enjoy

It must in this thread finally be revealed that Lotus Eater is a tough, fearless, rawboned amazon woman who has the rest of us Brains shaking in our boots. I suspect she just doesn't feel pain the way the rest of us do.
