August 19th is the 4th anniversary of Haoshi's opening. Lynn's class will perform the opening scene from Chicken Run, and Mandi and Yours Truly will play Mrs. and Mr. Tweedy, the evil owners of Tweedy Farm. Mandi will need a trench coat and knee-high boots ; I will need padding to make a gigantic potbelly (at the rate I'm going, I won't for the 5th anni), one of those Scottish/Commie caps... and a hairpiece simulating a combover. I haven't had the time to start a productin with my students, but no more excuses: next weekend we start rehearsing. What, I haven't figured out yet, but something. I remember all the childhood productions I took part in: grade 1, where I had to dig the cards out of my picket in front of the school, got laughed at by 400 kids, yet kept my poise; grade 3, where the evil witch Mrs. Louden, who hated me, demoted me from narrator to mulberry bush because "he looks back at the actors too much", not that anyone ever mentioned it to me; grade 5, as the understudy for Dick Deadeye in the Gulbert and Sullivan Operetta HMS Pinafore (we wore sailor hats! but couldn't keep them ; grade 6 (USA!), where I came up with the idea of funny commercials between scenes (stolen from a Woody Woodpecker cartoon), and brought down the house with a subtle marijuana reference; grade 12, as Hannibal in Curious Savage, when in the darkness I kicked an ashtray backstage that the whole audience heard. I just gotta give this experience to my kids. Thinking cap: ON.

got ya beat: my grade 3 production of "A Christmas Carol" and I am the ONLY Tim in my entire school...thought I was a shoo-in for the part of "Tiny Tim." But nooooo - they gave the part to my best friend, Todd Franklin. I was relegated to a bit part as one of the guys trying to collect money for the poor. Obviously, I am still traumatized to this day!

I had to sing a solo at a concert one year. I walked onto the stage, stood in front of the microphone and the orchestra moved right along into the next scene leaving me there waiting for a cue. I love putting on plays with my students and I plan a big Christmas production this year.
