I got an email from my aunt back home, asking if the monsoon was going to hit me. "No," I replied, "it's raining, but not that much. These things generally happen in the South."
Wrong- it's headed right this way. They've closed the Bayuquan school and are bracing for impact; we, being inland, will probably just get stiff wind and buckets of rain.
Hope the seal on the roof holds.

You have a seal on your roof? How does it catch fish up there? And isn't that a tad cruel? Liked it so much I said it twice - sorry - having a bad tech day.

This is a TYPHOON. Pacific hurricane. We just had one blow through here but don't know if it's the same one or not. Liaoning can definitely get them...Dalian got some brushes with them too.
Monsoons are those seasonal heavy rains that happen in tropical areas. Only some deep southern fringes of China see those.

They do it with unskilled labour in Chinese sweatshops now. Thousands of western line-drawers around the globe are now unemployed.

It rained heavily over the passed/past/pissed weekend. A tree nearly fell over. Nice Chinese man/lady came and tied the tree back up. Very windy, it was.
Village next to the golf course (this is Shanghai daaaaarling, and that's where the school dumped us. Errr, the compound around the course, not the village) got flooded, the crops still look damaged today.
Yup - full circle. 3 years ago him and I visited Shanghai for a fateful 8 days. Yes, in a typhoon. "Can't be that bad", we thought. At least 45 workers died. "Just like Wellington on a bad day." Pudong was nothing but open vistas of empty new roads at that time. Plastic ponchos that sit in the safety of small bags didn't really do it.
Yesterday, we trawelled up the Oriental Pearl tower - BEING the tourist. We finally discovered the joint that we sheltered in during the 2003 typhoon. LOTS of people now - damn Super Brand Mall.
PS. Have I earned enough for that shot Raoul?

Distemper shot and a good nights sleep from Raoul please.

Oh yeah, monsoons: it's rainy and gross here today. Almost chilly. Makes it tough to go out, but sure beats sticky heat.

Chilly is good. Already planning what soups to cook for the long winter just around the corner. Apart from the traditional fare I'm dreaming of a new recipe using those super big radishes... the ones that look like a carrot but have purple skins. This will be cooked and blended with stewed green apples and fresh yoghurt and flavoured with a good teaspoon of cumin and freshly ground black pepper.
And oh the joys of a baked dinner and perhaps a creme caramel for dessert.
